Hello!

We just bought a place with 14 acres, and are looking at tractors. We will mainly need it for brushhogging/mowing. We also have some small projects - extending the water lines, moving some gravel, nothing extensive.

We found this tractor, and I was wondering if it would work for us (be big enough). Our property is fairly flat, no mud.
We have never had to buy a tractor before, and with all the many choices, we could use any helpful advice.

Thanks!

I think you will eventually feel that it is too small for 14 acres. How much of that will be mowing and brush hogging? You will only be able to pull about a 48in mower, so it could take some time. What dealers are close to you?

Over all, 95% will be mowing and brush hogging. About 50% of that is "yard" and 50% pasture.
I actually like mowing, so the time factor doesn't worry me. Any advice on how much bigger we
should consider. Is it just a time factor, or is it not powerful enough? Here is what the pasture
looks like.

I should have said that our budget is pretty small - under $6K. There are several different dealers
within 50 miles, and we have just been looking online mainly.

Thanks for the help!

Hi. Welcome to TBN.
Bobcat is a rebadged Kioti made by Daedong of S. Korea. They are good solid tractors. Bobcat is selling off any remaining stock and is no longer selling the compact tractors when inventory is gone.
Are you buying the tractor new or used?

Here's a link to a press release from when they came to market:
Bobcat CT122 Brings Power and Performance to Compact Tractors

Probably best mowing option is from the rear PTO. Some wish there were a three speed transmission in HST. Are you looking at HST or shuttle shift?

It is used. We are waiting on more information from the seller.

I will admit that HST and shuttle shift are greek to me. I know nothing about them at all. Back in the day, I used to run a ford that was this size, cleaned stalls, moved the manure pile, disked the riding arena, and brush hogged with it. I can learn to drive pretty much anything.

What is the difference between the two? Is one better than the other?

Thanks!

I doubt you can get that Bobcat tractor/backhoe for your $6000 budget

Actually, it's within our price range, with enough left for a brush hog.

if you can buy that tractor for less than 6 K, buy it and do not look back
You can always sell it for more

One caveat, was that tractor in a flood?

That was my thought as well. Hopefully they will get back to us soon :)

Sounds to good to be true.. Is it stolen ?
The backhoe alone would cost that new.
There is no way for me to know if it's stolen or not. I have never seen another one like it for sale, so I have no reference.

Stolen is a great question, it is just super cheap, I would think that tractor would be in the 12-16 K range if it looks as good as it appears in the pic

That price does seem odd. An auction just ended on a 122 here in Mn with 68 hours and it went for 11550 with no back hoe.

HST is hydrostatic transmission, two speeds, on that model. No shifting per se, just forward or reverse with two pedals. Shuttle is gear trans with clutch.
Ask for records of maintenance, original bill of sale, what dealer he bought it from, and verify all you can. You don't want a stolen tractor for any price.
You could take the serial number and check with Bobcat corporate to see if it is reported missing or stolen. Hoe is worth the 6K as stated. Be cautious.

I hear you. For all we know, it could be some kind of scam. We will just have to wait and see what happens. It could look great and not run... just don't know.

If we even get that far, we will check it out before handing over our hard earned cash :)

That very tractor was on Craigslist a while back for a really low price. It probably was a scam. I also find it listed on ebay by an equipment dealer. I sent them a message and told them their tractor was on craigslist and they never said anything back.
