17 year old? BX 23
I was going back and forth with the tractor, cutting some (level bucket) and scraping some (perpendicular bucket floor) leveling after cutting some dirt for another location.
Sudden fluid flow out of cylinder/shaft joint, cylinder still operates.

Age failure - or did I load the bucket, load the cylinder, and blow the seal by leveraged pressure?

THX guys.

How old is it?

Is it simply loose? I've got a female/female coupler in a couple places and over the years of ownership, I've once/thrice had those come loose and I'm ready to yank the hoses off when all I needed to do was tighten them.

(how old is the hose) If it's 17 years then it's a good suspect. I didn't catch the 17 first time through.....darn glasses.... ( always blame the wife or the glasses!!)

Oh, it's definitely not the hose, it's the shaft.
I would have been happy with just the hose....

By scraping with bucket perpendicular to floor do you mean the bucket in the dumped position and then pushing? If yes then potentially you could have over pressurized the rod end since tractor pushing would be trying to extend the cylinder and especially if not fully dumped.

could possibly also have bent the rod but that is easy to check by extending the cylinder fully and looking at it or place a straight edge on the rod.

rebuilding a blown seal is not a major project

OK - not perp. to floor, but bucket floor perpendicular to ground - edge scraping.
And either pushing forward or pulling back, I was busy!
Seems like... if hand valve was at rest (holding) a nd I pushed forward, then bucket edge becomes lever against cylinder, over pressure rear seal?
Same, pull tractor back, lever against cylinder front seal?

Either way, 17 years seems about right (2 lift cylinders were done last year) for just normal wear and tear, but this literally a flood; acute, not a leak.

I seem to recall reading about bent rods in one of these cases.... guess I'm glad it just 'blew'.

I am going to say the scraping with bucket dumped as you described (perpendicular) damaged the cylinder seals. You should back drag at 45° or less.
Yes, you can also bend cylinder rods too.

Got it rebuilt, it was the last pressure seal as shaft exits - in pieces.
So, pushing forward would give a lever effect, but no seal on metal rear end, still could hurt center seal or shaft.
Pulling backward multiplies pressure toward shaft end seal as I found.

Anyone got any insights on placing standard wiper seals?
I have a heck of a time - sometimes - getting started level or even.
Often the part could not be pressed ('back' side irregular) without a special rig.
Anybody great at this?

Don't backdrag with bucket perpendicular. I was rushing, distracted and knew better but had grapple wedged down among boulders and hit reverse. $1500 later I had 2 new cylinders! Won't be my last bonehead move I'm sure.
