Box Scraper BIg Ox Rollover Box Scraper

Hi Guys:
I am new to the forum, and just bought a 72 inch Big Ox Rollover Box Scraper. Three ripper shanks are missing tips, and have been quite worn. It looks like I have to pull a long rod that secures all the ripper shanks, but if I do that is it going to be a bear to get the rod back in? I was wondering if anyone might have a parts diagram and/or owner's manual for this BB, as I really don't know much about it. The nameplate shows it made by Southeastern Manufacturing Co., which I understand was bought by Modern Equipment/Dragon Products. I did a fairly extensive internet search but could not find documentation for this scraper. Thanks.

Pull the rod, it isn't that hard to get it back in. I have a couple of these except mine are Gannon's.

As long as you have the rippers pointed up, or so that their notches are up, it's not that hard to get the rod back through.

I have a Gannon Earthcavator RO-Box Blade and we pulled all ours out to put on rust inhibitor and repaint the ripper shafts/bars.

They went back pretty easily even with the new layers of paint.

The notches kinda guide it through.

Do either of you know if the ripper shanks for your Gannon are the same as for the Big Ox? Three are missing tips, and they are worn a lot, so they should be replaced.

Bob, I don't know for a fact, but I think that they would be, being the same design and all. I don't think that you want to get Gannon rippers tough, or maybe I should say that I doubt that you want to pay for Gannon ripper shanks. I believe that they are $60 each + you still have to purchase the teeth to go on them. They ARE NOT CHEAP. I think that you can get some aftermarket ones for around $30 each and they come with the teeth already crimped on them.

I'd say that the gannon shanks are worth the extra $$. A buddy has a lower end box with the lower end ripper shanks. His bend. The Gannon ones in mine don't. It's worth it to me.

The Gannon ones ARE awesome, but it wouldn't hurt to try the aftermarket brands.

They're not the same as going to a cheaper box blade, where the ripper shanks may not be as well supported.

Try agri-supply, belarus, messners, ebay, and TSC, but ABICR, TSC doesn't carry notched shanks, so that mayn't be helpful.

Sometime it turns out to be to be both the most cost- and energy-efficient way to shop.

I just wish that all online vendors were better about updating their inventory listings....

That's surely some heavy steel!! [My BB's Big Big Big cousin- for e.g., mine only has one set of the flanges supporting the scarifier bar front and back.]

Cool that you already have a 2" hitch on there- I ended up bolting mine on a little off-center [the flange is on center, so I had to offset from that and I'm not welding good enough yet to risk my BB].

Where did you end up buying your tips?

Unless they're different from the ones already on there, they're not really welded on, more like heated and crimped at the circular area on the shank [and tip] using a hammer and punch [like a really big nailset, IIRC].

Yes, this bad boy is stout, with the side plates being 1/2" thick! I bought my tips at the local Kubota dealer, who had several styles in stock.

Thanks for the tip about the crimping thing. I chose to weld these on because two of the shanks were badly worn. When the tips are worn on those shanks, it will be time to replace the shanks, and then all tips will be crimped as you suggested.

Once I got the tips on today, I found out why the grease fittings wouldn't take grease: the axle is totally rusted to the outside bearing retainer. I shot a can of WD40 on it, pounded like crazy (got about 90 degrees of motion on one, about 30 on the other. If I remove the two bolts on each retainer, I can flip the tool to engage the rippers, but this is not an acceptable method. Not entirely sure of how to proceed from here, except to keep putting penetrating oil on the thing and hope it eventually loosens up enough to pull it apart and clean it up (I seriously doubt that I will find replacement parts, so I have to make what I have work).

On the positive side, I just spent two hours cutting sharp edges off of ditch banks in dense silty clay. The Kubota had no trouble pulling this monster, and because of the extendable lower links, hitching up was a breeze! Just have to get the axle freed up, and it will be a wonderful addition to my implement collection.

BTW, what I am calling the bearing retainers is the black rectangle with one rounded end next to the Big Ox label in the second photo.
