One recent find was a Toro snow blower left out for pick up.
I knew that the owner was not at all a handy person so I collected it.
The only things wrong were the starter cord was missing and the electric starter unserviceable.
Cord was a no brainer and dismantling the starter I discovered that the brushes were sticking. A bit of fine sandpaper fixed that in no time.
I use it to clear the snow on my porch!
More than once I retrieved electrical devices that merely needed a new plug or a simple switch.
Drills needing a new chuck, skill saws missing the guide return spring are another common find.
Labor rates is what discourages most folks.

Yesterday we had a pallet of 6" x 6" x 1/2" angle that we kept moving around the shop with no place to keep it. I asked the boss if I could have it. He said sure. 9 pieces about 7' long.
Then I looked in the dumpster and there was a 12' step ladder in there. Tool guy threw it away because the hinge was missing a rivet and somebody put a welding rod in it.
Then this morning a truck came back from a job with some leftover cable tray. 10' lengths,12" and 18" wide. Flip it upside down it looks just like the wire shelving that Lowes sells. I need to make some brackets to sit it on. 2 lucky days in a row.

Nice find. A lot of the time kid's toys get trashed, but there are also lots of times when they kids just outgrows them and they are still perfectly functional. Then the parent is left to decide whether they want to sell, donate or just throw it out. Nice to see it keep getting played with instead of landing in the landfill.

I stop weekly at a local metal recycler. Last stop there was a bin full of new aluminum angle, 1" square tubing and and other shapes like U channel and flat strips. At $1 a pound, I had to contain myself to stop at $20. Aluminum is so easy to work and it doesn't rust, so it is perfect for tractor and RV modifications. Every time I'm at Home Depot and look at their aluminum stock prices, it makes my head spin.

I don't know if this qualifies a scavenged but a friend of mine gave me a John Deere 506 rotary cutter. He figured his kids were just going to fight about it so he gave it to me. I didn't argue.
