Anybody have recommendations for an exterior house paint? I remember somebody on here saying that Behr, from Home Depot, was the best they had ever used. Consumer Report also give this paint high marks. Any comment?

I've used Behr, I like their paints better than the stains they sell. Sherwin Williams is selling "Duration", supposedly good for 35 years.

IMHO Behr is the best for interior and Sherwin Williams is the best for exterior.

Several years ago, a daughter owned a double wide mobile home with hardi-board or hardi-panel siding that was painted gray. She decided to have it painted a cream color and I was just sure it would take 2 coats to cover that gray, but one coat of Behr worked just fine. That was more than 7 years ago and even though she sold the mobile home a few years ago, it still look just fine.

Many years ago, when I worked in Research, I was told by a former employee of Pittsburgh Paints that they had tested all the leading paints for their ability to stand up to weathering. He said the winner was Sear's Best. That's all I ever use on the outside of my house and if it's not the best, it's darn close.

I like Cabot solid stain. When it needs a new coat- need for scraping is minimal and rare- just apply on top. But once you use Cabot- you can't go back to paint- won't stick.

I use behrs deep tint stain (chocolate) and its held up well on our t-111.

There is a product made in NJ called Muralo. Don't know if you can get it your way, but it's an excellent product and economical.

Thank all of you for your responses.

The Sears stores around here do not sell paint anymore. The Sherwin Williams is about half again more expensive than Behr. So I will probably go with them.

Thanks again for your help.

Once you step up to at least mid grade paint, the largest factor is your prep job. Make sure all of your surfaces are clean, loose material is removed, primed (preferably on all sides) and then you follow the manufactures directions. Your sheen makes a big difference to, the glossier the more durable but a touch up difficult. Flat is not as durable but does touch up well. BTW, make sure and caulk all of your crack to keep moisture from getting in your wood.

FYI Sherwin Williams is having a 40% off sale July 20-23

Sherwin-Williams Coupons and Sales. Print a Coupon and Save Today.

My mom was repainting some rooms a few months back and so she was shopping for paint. I forgot which brand she ended up using but I know it was expensive, something like $40 a gallon. The store she bought from said that they had sales every week/month so she waited for the sale to buy the paint. It was a significant percentage off and well worth the wait.

Later,
Dan

I use Sherwin-Williams Deckscape and the last time I bought a gallon, I didn't have a coupon, but the manager at the Sherwin-Williams store printed one out and gave me the discount.:)

We are going with the Sherwin-Williams. The 40% off sale this weekend makes even their new top of the line Emerald Paint affordable. It has the mildew and flow additives already built in. According to one pro painter I talked to it is the best exterior paint made as far as ease of application and coverage. Since we are buying 22 gallons this will still be nearly $1000 with taxes. That is a couple hundred higher than other brands even with the discount but if it will last even one year longer then it is worth it. Thanks again for all your input.

While I've had good luck with Behr, and even some other brands, I just don't think you can go wrong with Sherwin-Williams.

Be careful not to get the new "green" paints. Not the color, but supposedly better for the environment.

I had a house done with the interior "green" Kelley-Moore paint and it did not stick to the wall worth a hoot. Even the most gentle masking tape pulled the paint right off.

When I marked where to drill for towel holders and such, the pencil lines made the paint come off.

A few years ago, went to the big box store and they had miss colored 5 gal buckets of exterior paint for 15 bucks each. Bought 3 and blended them, then sprayed. All of the paints where real close to what we wanted, so it came out great. All of the paints where "high end" paints, and are showing no sighs of failing.

Pete, we weren't that lucky. Ordered 25 gallons of Sherwin-Williams best exterior paint. Even with the 40% off it was over $1000. Good thing about it is that it isn't tinted yet. I will take 4 to 5 gallons back at a time to be mixed and anything not opened I can get my money back.

Anybody want to come and help me paint?

getting a pain that adheres to what you will be painting. and doing good prep work can make a large difference for any paint. also how you apply it, to thick vs multi layers and letting it dry or almost dry pending on manufacturer instructions.

some paints do not take well to the SUN and fade.

some paints may not hold up well to high moisture areas / being wet for a long period of time. some paints may not last of with a material that expands and contracts with temperatures.

some materials and paints may need a primer. and primer applied correctly.

prep work may include scrapping old paint off, to power washing, to wiping everything down with a sponge and/or rags. to sanding. to calking seals and cracks before or perhaps after things are painted.

not a big fan of painting over calking. due to different types of calking can expand and contract resulting in paint flaking / peeling off of calking but also allow paint right up near edge of calking to start to peel away when calking is painted over.

how you apply the paint, either brush, or sponge, to airless sprayer, to air compressor and paint spray gun. can make a difference in how different paints hold up.
