If Money was not an issue and you could buy any set of disk harrows you wanted what would you buy given the following parameters?

I run an 83hp tractor John Deere 5083E

Must be at least 8 ft in width or greater

Must be portable (can be put on a trailer and moved to multiple sights)

Easy to adjust gangs

Heavy (I want it to do work not just scratch the surface)

Well built and easy to work on for maintenance

The primary use-Food plots for wildlife as well as pasture maintenance and creation of seed bed for pasture

Implements I already own:
Box blade 8ft
Rake
5 disc 3point plow
Cultipacker
Bush Hog
Old cheap disc that are way too light for my current use and too small for my tractor
FEL
Pallet Forks

I will turn my plots every 2-4 years with the plow but for maintenance/cutting fire breaks/seed bed prep I need a good set of disk. I am not a JD nut to the point that I care what color my implements are I just want a good one. I can't run a tiller due to the amount of roots and rocks in my soil.

I am leaning toward Brown Manufacturing because of the weight and ease of adjusting the gangs. Any others I should look at? Thank you in advance.

I like my farm king. It was about 2800. I added a few hundred lbs to it. 8 and a half foot. Land pride has some nice stuff

Frontier 1386, Atlas 1500 and check the Athens site. They have some 3PT units that get pretty heavy.

I was looking for one last year for my JD 5303 and wound up buying a used Long brand unit with 4" frame and rebuilt it. Figure I got about 1/3 to 1/2 price of new comparable unit.

Thanks to all. I have several of these dealers close to me and will check them out. The Atlas is made right here in Alabama and I always like to keep it local if I can. Does anyone know if the Atlas has a quick gang adjustment?

Question on the frontier that was mentioned...it states that it is for up to 75 HP tractor max. Mine is an 83hp. Is this an issue?

Mitigator, I too live in Bama. I have a 70hp kubota and Lowery mfg out of Boaz makes a heavy duty disc that I bought this year. I would check them out. Just google "lowery mfg". Well priced, too.

I have your tractor and pull a 8 ft athens offset with 24" disks. It will definitely do work, but not so good as a finisher. Then I have a 12' Krause that finishes well but is way too light for primary tillage and is weighted down with railroad rails. I want a 10' Athens with 22" disks that weighs about 150# per disk.

I recommend contacting your local JD dealer for input on the Frontier, but in my opinion you won't have any issues. The hitch is rated for Cat 1 and 2. The main issues I see are from making turns with the plow engaged in plowing deep.

When I looked at the Atlas 1500 I recall it having a screw type adjustment. Not a bad set up in my opinion.

The Brown was what I was intending to buy (see last few sentances of original post) but after looking at the Athens model 65, Frontier DH1396 and Atlas 1500 today at local dealers I went with the Atlas 1500 8ft 20/22/9. I am in need this week and could not wait for the ordering of a Monroe tuffline.

Deciding factors for me were as follows. I called the manufacturer/distributor of Atlas (Darrell Harp Enterprises) they were very helpful and they are an Alabama company, it came with scrapers installed when others did not, very well built and heavy (looked beefy moreso than frontier and on par with Athens), better price than others for as much if not more disc (saved about $1,300 considering scrapers), and the sales person actually knew his product.

Hope this helps someone. Thank you guys for all your help.

Good choice. I was impressed with that unit and it's price. Listed is a link where I looked up a bunch of info on disc harrows and the Atlas 1500 was on my short list.

Would be interested in hearing your thoughts once you put it to use. Congratulations on your purchase.

Here is a report after a few hours of work with the new disc.

It is heavy. For my tractor with 83 HP it makes the 3 point work to pick it up. Driving it with these disc is much different than with my old disc. They will definitely steer the tractor if not carefu when on slopes. It is a good thing I have an MFWD (4wd) because it will make it grunt in soft soil conditions.

As far as the work they will do I am happy with it. I disked an area that had never been worked and had about 5 ft worth of brush and grass growing with disc set to medium aggressive. It made short work of it in 3 passes. I know that this is not what disc are intended for I just wanted to play with it.

The real test was when I freshened a fire break. It was much easier than with my old disc and about 4 feet wider than my disc plow and should cut down on my working time while giving me a better end product.

For now I am going to need to leave my loader on since my property is hilly until I can get some weights for the front of the tractor. In other words these things are beefy and they have some a** behind them.
