Balancing brush hog blades

I noticed my brush hog has developed a wobble at certain speeds, like the blades might be out of balance. They're the 1/4" thick ones and have been sharpened 3-4 times. How do you balance the blades? Do you weigh them? I have a cone balancer for my mower blades, but have never balanced brush hog blades before.

geneP, that's something I've been intending to ask an "expert" myself someday, but never think of it when I'm around a dealer, so what I've done is just what you said. I have some 20# scales and I weigh them to get both blades the same weight and have never had a problem.

I've experienced the same problem, so I decided to make a balance beam scale. I took 2x2 about 2ft. long and found the center point, put a eye hook in and then attached chains or heavy cord with S hooks on each end of the 2x2. Then take a small string level and attach it next to the eye bolt, then fine tune the balance by gluing small washers on the light end to balance the setup. This method is very sensitive and accurate to within >gram.

Gator2, that's a novel idea! Have you used the balance beam, and did it correct your imbalance?

Sure did! I even bought an extra set of blades and they were out of balance from the manufacture.
