Hey Shortgame, First of all don't let the position of my rear axle fool ya. The weight of the back hoe will be excessive in comparison to the tongue end of the hoe. The back hoe digger weighs in excess of 750lbs, and with it's end position it would take a great deal of ballast to equal out the weight difference. In other words the back hoe will never be perfectly balanced. If I was to raise the stab jacks and put the hoe in the upright position it would certainly raise the rear of the hoe up unless it was hooked to a tractor or truck. The whole trick about articulating the hoe with out a tow vehicle is to use the stab jacks in conjunction with the hoe boom itself, unless of course you have the means to build an elaborate box frame with a small hoe boom. Post a pic of your project and I'll see if I have offer any suggestions. Hope this helps.

I opted to go with the 2" ball hitch that came on the boat trailer. I think that can't be trusted, so my plan is to have a strong bar that will swing or slide into place just below the hitch so the tongue can't rise up off the ball if the hitch should fail.

I will just have to put a block under the hoe at the swing pivot each time I park it, as the hydraulics would fade and let it down if that was all I used to park it. It's still going to beat a shovel.

Here it was before I put the tongue on it:

I just went out on the porch and shot three pics of it.

I was welding the tongue on yesterday when the rains came back. I had carried the welder out to that stack of concrete blocks and had to grunt it back in without having finished the job. I parked it the first night with just the outriggers and bucket to hold it up. I found the tongue high in the air the next morning and had to pick up the boom with the FEL and put that block under it.

There are more pics of the build on NormL's BH thread.

I see what you mean about the axle being rearward of the hoe boom. I see no reason why the concept will not work with your machine also. My first reccomendation would be to try and move the back how attachment to over the axle. This would give you better balance, however If you can't do that then get one of those trailer jacks from tractor supply and weld it to the center of the frame as forward of the axle as you can, preferably under the back hoe. They have some pretty beefed up ones there that can be moved out of the way or removed when needed. This should prevent the frame from tilting when the hydraulics leak off, thus preventing the tongue from being in the raised position. You will need some type of stabilization for the tongue end of the frame. Make it at least half the lenght of the main axle and as far rearward as practicle. Remember, the main axle should not have to support the lifting power of the back hoe, so always make sure when operating it that the main axle is off the ground, if not you will damage the axle.

I shot another pic out the kitchen window. A better perspective on this rainy day.

looks good shortgame.

I took a few photos of my backhoe since I've redone it. The way I redid it is holding up this time. It's a lot better. Haven't had any failures with it since I redid it.

I would have took an action video of it. But yesterday my 23 year old Briggs seized up. It would run then I would hear a screech and then it would just stop. I got it too free up a few more times and then it finally seized up for good. No big deal as I have my Briggs Twin that's only about 13 years old. It just needs another carb to get it going.

The engine worked fine while digging up a sewer line. Well we were trying to find it but failed too that day. I was gonna go back the next day but then the engine seized.

So I told her I would have to wait until I get my other engine going.

I've got a video of it uploading to youtube right now. I'll post a link to it as soon as it gets done uploading.

The backhoe dug all that dirt out. I'm making my tiny well pit larger. That way I won't hit my head while I'm down there. I already hit my head a few times and that was enough.

Well as promised. Here's a video of my backhoe. Hope to have one of it in action as soon as I get it up and running again. That is when I change out the motor.

Some folks have asked if I ever finished my towable. I did, and found it was about worn out in many ways. I use it now and then in light duty situations.
