Auto-Dark Welding Helmet.......

One place that's easy to get "Welders Eye" is in the coalmines, and you don't even have to be welding.... I have done a lot of welding underground and that was before they came out with 'Auto-Darkening Helmets', but one wouldn't have helped much because it was dark anyway.. You had to do a lot of 'head flipping' and you couldn't wear a light & a welding helmet.

The welding arc would reflect off the coal & the roof of the mines..especially if the roof was wet, and it being dark made it easy to get your eyes burned.

I got so use to 'head flipping' that it turned into a habit... and my wife would remind me in a store that i wasn't in the mines. :p :D
You get it welding in a boiler's firebox too. The darkness to start with makes your pupils open more and the reflections cause what you also experience.

As far as putting the potato slices over the eyes, it works but very slowly. the best thing to do is, a clear liquid is available from drug stores to put in your eyes for this. I"ve had mine burnt twice before and it works alot better and much faster. It"s been so long ago though, that I dont remember if I had to have a prescription for it or not. Just call a drug store and they should be able to tell you. zman

Well Guys, put that new HF Helmet to the test! Really, really like it! It's a little bigger than our old SpeedGlas, (which keeps my nose off the glass!), but it's lite, automatic on and a pleasure to use. ~Scotty

Take the knob off the side and toss it in the trash.

Every time I went to flip it by hand, I'd hit the adjustment knob one way or the other.

I have done the same thing several times.
