How accurate are poll numbers when you’re asking people to admit to something illegal, then comparing the result to a different question/ timeframe about legal behavior?
Apples and kiwis.

How accurate are poll numbers...

You could ask this about anything. It's the only data available for the question at hand. If you have more accurate data, I'm willing to take a look. Until then, I stand by my assertion that they are not in the same category of "widely consumed."

Perhaps it's just schematics, but your original statement was that one was widely used and the other wasn't. I disagree with that. If you want to clarify that they're are both "widely used" but to different degrees, that's much more accurate, in my opinion anyway.

Here's a more recent study, by the way, which says 52% of Americans over 18 have tried marijuana, and of those, 44% use it now. 44% of 52% is almost 23% of Americans, by the way, which is more of an accurate comparison to your alcohol stats.

Speaking of criminals, now that marijuana is totally legal in 5 states I think and probably will soon be many more, already medicinally legal in many more, what about all the folks locked up for marijuana crimes??? I know many of them were heavily sentenced for marijuana because they couldn't be convicted of other crimes, and others were prosecuted for marijuana along with other crimes, but then there are those in jail strictly for marijuana offenses, what do we do with them?
Not true, a federal agent could arrest you anytime and might soon.

Won't happen.......they would have to arrest half the country..........it's here to stay and the list of states will grow.......

Nope, I still don't believe that either 13% or 23% qualifies as "widely consumed," at least not here in my little corner of the world. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that definition.

I suppose one's idea of wide use can vary by environment as well. Around where I work, it seems like 90% or better of the people smoke pot. Can't drive down any street without smelling it. Yet, most of my friends are long-haired rock musician types, and (oddly enough) I can probably count on one hand the number of them who smoke pot.

I was at a race at Aqueduct racecourse a couple weeks ago. Several joints were being passed around one section of the stands. They seemed to be having a good time. Most of the people there could have used one it seemed. Not a lot of winners that day, given the groans and screaming at the monitors.

NY isn't 'legal' but it wasn't stopping those folks from openly imbibing.

We have DUI laws on the books. We don't need to force a 'moral imperative' upon each other, because I don't want one enforced upon me.

I know that since Alaska has legalized pot again, DUI arrests are up, statewide. Troopers have evidently been trained to spot the potheads now.

This is a real hot topic, 14 pages of posts in two days.

Just how hot is the topic around where you are?

With the nationwide legalization looming I never hear anything pro or con on the subject among friends, family or coworkers. Seems nobody cares either way.

We do hear some on the news but its mostly about the different levels of gvmnt squabbling over their cut of the tax revenues.

I am afraid I have to agree with JB. The number of states will grow. Follow the money. Money talks and BS walks. The alcohol industry may fight it, but I think some will start to invest in it and try to profit from it. The states will sell out, they want the money.

Good thread... 16 pages, and all civil conversation.

I've been clean for 6+ years, but smoked my share prior to that. Owned and operated my own contracting company for 12 years during that time... be it smoke, a drink or two, it doesn't matter, all things in moderation is my motto. I prefer weed... current life choices and situation, and largely respect for my wife and kids, dictate that I stay clean. But nothing more relaxing than taking a few puffs, listening to music, and tinkering on the latest truck project, or straightening up the shop, brush hogging, cutting firewood.... or most any of my pass-time enjoyable activities take on a slightly more enjoyable aspect, easing the stresses, allowing them to slip away a little easier.

All things in moderation...

Great Motto: "All Things In Moderation" That would solve a multitude of problems and life would improve for everyone.

Here there is are complaints about the Feds giving a convicted terrorist $16.5 million Dollars.

As for pot? This area was a haven for artsy crafty types in the '60's and I would be surprised if they gave up their MJ.
