Air Compressor Troubleshooting

at work we did that. had an old upright 60g comp that gave out, got a new upright with it's own 60g tank, but old pump was 2 stage and higher SCFM than the new one which was single stage :( . we junked the old comp, and chained the tanks together and let it air in the morning. PLENTY of air even when using the 1" gun to change tires on the 16 wheeler..

That 90 PSI and scfm rating on the tool is minimum air needed to run the tool, not maximum.

Actually they'll work, to some extent, on lower pressure. The 90 psi is the pressure at which they are rated, and if the tool should break and they could prove you were running higher pressure, they could deny warranty coverage. But I've never known of that happening.

For reference, HP ratings on compressors are often deceiving. A better indicator of the true HP of a compressor is the amps on the motor. A 3 HP, 230V motor pulls 15 amps, a 5 HP 23 amps. A 2 HP, 115V motor should pull 20 amps. If not, you are not getting a full 2 HP. A typical 3 HP compressor puts out about 9.5 CFM@ 125 PSI or 10.5 at 90 PSI. Sounds like your compressor is closer to a 1.5 HP, for what it's worth.

yep.. alot of places list 'peak' hp.. :)

kind of like lawnmower hp ratings. it's the number tested, with top fuel, and no accessories onthe engine.. and max rpm, just befor ethe head flies off.. then they stamp that onthe engine as it's rating.. ;)

No doubt. How can I compare labeled output against ideal about as you are saying? Is there an equation or rule of thumb?

I got recently got a regulator and filter combo from TSC it's a Cambell...it seems to work fine...no issues with any of my tools

The easiest way to check what it is doing is to check the amp draw when it is running under load, and compare to the values I gave you above.
