acer notebook and pc card

at work we have an acer notebook on vista.. has a pc card broadband modem ( sprint / qualcom pc500 ). every now and then you put the card in and windows fails to load the drivers... other times it works fine..

any ideas?

Try putting the card in ...THEN start the laptop. If windows does not see the card it may not load the drivers at start up.

but those pc cards are suposed to be hot swapable.. and windows should dynamically load the drivers oncve it detects the new hardware.. same as with USB.

Like I said.. it is doing it most of the time.. just some of the time it doesn't.

Vista is the problem.. my acer with vista act's the same way when I plug in my camera,, Sometimes it's fine but other times it won't comunicate.. arggg:confused2:

My HP desktop is running Vista and I've occasionally had a (somewhat similar problem?) when I plug in a flash drive. Although what mine has done (although seldom) is that my computer shuts down/restarts. My son-in-law says it's because of the sudden power surge.

Check and see if there is an updated driver available for your modem from Sprint or the manufacturer. If not you might try deleting and reinstalling the drivers.

sounds like a good idea on the drivers. next time i'm around the computer I'll click the driver tag and let it go look for new ones and see what it finds.

Is this a USB device or a card in the card slot?

If USB, try a different USB port.

If card, do you have two card slots and could you be getting it in the top or bottom slot from time to time?

As was said.. it's a pc card .. only 1 slot on this machine.

there is another.. but it's a half sized slot..

Bummer. I never had the pleasure of working with Vista, so good luck. :laughing:

Make sure you have the latest and greatest drivers and the all of your Windows updates are current.

Also, see if your anti-virus/spyware programs are the culprit. Sometimes those kinds of programs can cause all kinds of problems when things try to load up.

yep.. I hate vista. vista 32 is bad enough.. but vista 64 is just plain horrible when it comes to legacy support for software or hardwar mor ethan about a year old.

can't even dock my palm pilot on my vista 64 laptop..

Vista had some problems earlier, but I've let mine do all the updates/upgrades or whatever you want to call them, so for some time now, it's sure been better than XP for me.
