The fancy path tracking backup cameras require a fair bit of software along with a lot of steering angle sensors (sensors on my buddy's F150 just died on him). Unlikely to be avaliable as an aftermarket item, or at least not for under 4 figures for the foreseeable future.

At least we know there will never be a software problem:sarcastic:

dickfoster,

WOW...I think your article (above) should be a "Sticky," as was basically just suggested by 94BULLIT.

I think you could make a nice consulting fee, just helping us camera-ignorant souls make better choices. Any chance I could send you a PM, when I get around to choosing a camera/screen setup?

And thank you for your theory on the Tesla tragedy--certainly seems reasonable (not that I have the expertise to know, of course).

Lastly, have you seen the backup cameras in the new GMC pickups? My neighbor's is probably a 2015, and his screen is large, color and MAPS OUT, to like the INCH, his projected path, IN REVERSE, when he's backing up, with these cool, "imaginary" (green? dotted?) lines. IOW, if you move the wheel slightly, the two sets of projected tire paths (or, more likely, outside dimensions of the vehicle) MOVE, in REAL TIME, to show you WHERE you'll be, in case you can't judge it for yourself.

It's pretty wild, to me--like the future is NOW, in some respects--but then, I'm easily amused. LOL

I wondered if you knew what that technology was called, and if it would be configurable, by the user, so as to be adaptable to our tractors? (Obviously, changing tractor implements would screw up any preset calibrations, like adding a BH, removing a BH, etc..., but it would be cool if one had their machine set up the same, most of the time, and they could "map" it to their, particular, most-common implement/tractor configuration.)

IF such a thing exists (outside of GMC and the other OEM's, of course), any idea what type of costs would be involved?

Thanks again,

My Hoe

Sure shoot me a PM is you want to.

No I didn't see the Ford camera I quit looking at much of it. I just see an ad for something once in awhile and point it out to the wife and say, see I told you so. I think eventually you'll see an average of about six cameras on every car that rolls off the line.

Yes, I have seen the backup track display way back when all that stuff was in development. I know Hella was working on it along with some others too. We even put some stuff in the camera chip to allow the overlay.

When I was working instead of sitting on my dead behind I worked with all the major auto OEM development folks along with the tier 1 and some tier 2 suppliers who actually develop and sell the different camera systems to the OEMs. The OEMs just fold in what looks good to them to help sales but like to have some input and foresight especially in the area of safety systems like smart airbags, collision avoidance and driver visual aids like backup nighttime blind spot etc. One of these days I'm looking for the rear window and mirrors on cars and trucks to go the way of the dodo bird.

Cameras, displays etc. were new to all of them back then and the automotive industry was new to me so it was a bit of a learning curve for all of us. It's a challenging environment for cameras because of the huge temperature swings, especially high temps along with the difficult lighting issues so we developed some stuff for their unique needs. As it turns out some of that stuff is also useful in applications like security cameras.

As far as predictive track displays and stuff there is a lot of software development and image processing involved but I think just being able to see is the biggest thing anyway. At the speed you're going on a tactor your own brain is image processor enough. Use some care when choosing a lens with the field of view you need and you should be OK.

Backup cameras in cars is just the auto industry sticking their toe in the water as far as camera applications, much more will come. Rear vision, night vision, drowsy driver, adaptive cruise control or collision avoidance, smart air bags, and it goes on and on. Some things will help you see while some others you won't see but they will help save your life.

I dragged my company kicking and screaming into two markets, cell phones before cell phones had cameras and the auto industry. It's hard to buy a cell phone without a camera today and I expect the same thing will happen with cars. There isn't as much money to be made in cars because the size of that market compared to cell phones is almost insignificant, thousands compared to millions per year but there sure are a lot of lives that can be saved.

Thanks guys, at least I think I understand the issues better. I will try some suggestions. Thanks,

Pyle-PLCM7700Pyle - PLCM77 - On the Road - Rearview Backup Cameras - Dash Cams Not $50!!!! but close. I ordered this at my local walmart 65.61 + 5.56 tax 0 shipping = 71.17. I got this for my truck, I have a shell with no side windows, hard to see out. So far its OK. Easy to install, it would work well on a tractor also.

That screen is the same exact "no name" one I got from Amazon -- it's been working well for 1.5 years now. Camera looks different though.

A nifty place to try for the display is the back side of the sun visor. It's there when you need it and close enough to see but out of the way when you don't want it there.
I put a camera system in my truck so I made a sunvisor with the display in it. When I need to see the output from one of the cameras, I just flip the sun visor down and it's right there close enough to see and there is also no glare on the screen. I can also still see forward out the windshield too. Mine has been there for several years now with no problems. It saves space on the dash and doesn't obscure forward vision either. Just a thought you might try.

I'm curious about having the camera on all the time. Since these were designed for backup cameras and as such, on for short periods of time, has anyone had a problem with them if used all the time? I mean used as a rear view and on all the time. Do they get hot or start loosing sharpness?

I have a backup camera mounted on the back of my cargo trailer and when I tow I have it on the entire trip. I mounted the video screen in my truck next to rear view mirror never had an issue.

As others have said, not a problem at all. I've had my camera and 7" color monitor for two years. I switch them on when I start the tractor and they stay on as long as I'm operating, sometimes for 4-5 hrs straight.

Anybody happen to have a busted Pyle PLMRM72B monitor? I managed to misplace the cable & need a replacement. It's the cable with the 8-10 pins that attaches to the pigtail off the monitor & goes out to the cable with the small barrel plugs on it for the cameras.
