790 Oil Level

Gents

I am a little confused about the proper oil level. Normally the shop changes the oils in my 790 but this year I decided to do it. I drained all oil out of the motor, put on the new filter, added the recommended 4.3 quarts and the oil level is above the checkered lines on the dip stick, approx. 1/4" over the lines. I guess that I will drain a little oil to correct the measurement per the dip stick.

Is This this normal? I measured the oil very carefully, 1 gallon jug (4 Quarts) + 10 ounces from a quart bottle = 4.3 quarts..

What an I missing? Your input appreciated

Whether it is a tractor, truck, car or what have you they never hold exactly what the manual says. It can also depend on how hot the oil was when drained and how long it was allowed to drain. It is quite possible that there was some oil hung up inside the engine. It doesn't take much.

Are you sure you drained the oil sump from the lowest point? I also tilt the tractor toward the drain plug. Hot oil drains faster, I drain the tractor overnight after a good workout.

You probably didn't get all the oil out...first, always check and change oil on a level surface!
When I change my oil (had a 790, now a 4400), I add a couple or three quarts (for the 790, it was 3, intially) and let it set for a few minutes. Then check the oil level with the dipstick. If it's below the cross-hatch of the dipstick, add about another quart, then let it set again for a few minutes. Then check the oil level again. If the oil shows on the cross-hatch, you've got enough in the sump. I always liked mine to be about the middle or a tad higher in the cross-hatched area...never higher.
You're better off a bit low then too high. Too much oil in the sump can cause the oil to froth rather then splash (by the rotation of the crankshaft).

I haven't had to change the oil in the 4400 yet since it was changed just before I bought it (and only put about 20 hours on it since then). I will change it annually (regardless of the hours) after my first change in 2011.
