5ft brush hog on a 25hp compact

The owners manual on my Kioti ck20S states that a 4' mower max with a manual and a 5' max on a hydro tractor. The dealer said that with a hydro if the tractor starts lugging you can just let up on the go pedal. I have ran a 5' for years with no problems. BUT, would make sure back tires loaded and wouldn't use without a loader or front end weights.

Are Kioti's made so cheaply on frame strength that the manual says only 4-ft implements are the max? I know LS had problems like this and got twisted frames on some models that they recall all of those machines. Does this model have a sub-frame too?

OK, after noticing this CK20S, it makes sense to have ballast fluid in the tiny rear wheels. Darn, plenty of Hp, but lacks elsewhere for this machine. It's a SCUT wanting to be a MCUT size.

TYM lists the T25 as a subcompact, small-frame tractor.

Looking at these tractor weights... My ZTR weighs 1340 pounds. Almost as much as these tractors which we are asking to carry loaders and implements. 😬

TYM specs say 1881 lbs with ROPS. Using only one manufacturer for reference, J-Bar advertises their 5' cutters ranging from 412lb to 700lb depending on model. ROTARY CUTTERS

I also think it isn't just the weight to consider, but also the leverage exerted by having a 5' cutter on the 3pt.

Yeah they are almost a ton. Im sure it is well over a ton with the loader. I also have my tires loaded. Lifts and handles it fine. If i was mowing more than my 2acer field once a year, i think a 4 footer would be the better option to save on machine wear

CK20s are the smallest compact made. Not a subcompact. Everything on it is cast iron and they are heavy for their size. BUT they are still a small tractor. The reason the manual trans model called for a 4' mower was due to available hp. The HST model has a few tenths less hp at the PTO but can quickly adjust ground speed to compensate for lugging the engine. We have sold all three farms my wife and I inherited and I am no longer bush hogging 50-60 acres every year and no longer having to 'trim' around fields with crops in them. People have stopped and asked me why I had the little tractor in the field when there was a larger tractor and mower also there and I would tell them that it was my weedeater to go around the edges.

What type of terrain will you be using this on?

What type of material will you be cutting?

I run a 5 foot with my 2400H (24 HP) with no problems on flat ground. Never connect top link just let roll on the tail wheel. Adjust my speed based on material being cut.
For your safety at least use a chain in place of the top link. If the tractor will not pick the rotary cutter up you should not be risking danger to yourself by using it.

Guess I am ignorant but how is using chain as top link any safer than no top link on flat ground?

It is as you say about as dangerous as running without a top link. I use a top link.

A chain could keep the rear wheel of the rotary cutter dropping into a ditch when using.

This web link as quite a few post on top links and chains a rotary cutters.

. Enjoy your tractor seat time. Most peaceful less stressful time provided your equipment is setup correctly and good running. No wife, no chatter of family, no depressing media news. Just peaceful quiet time. Only time it was not quiet was when I found ground hornets.
Good Evening rodneyn,

When I was younger,.....much younger,......my dad left me in a field 5 or 6 miles from our home farm to mow. I had a gallon jug of water and a bologna sandwich in a paper bag. When he came back at lunch the tractor was, well not exactly stuck, but not movable. Front wheels on one side of a ditch, bush hog on the other side of the ditch, and the drive wheels not touching anything suspended over the ditch. I was asleep under a tree and if my uncle hadn't been with dad I would probably not be here today. THAT is how I got my reputation of getting stuck in the middle of a dry field. Forty years later I forgot about that ditch and did the same thing in the same field in the same ditch. That is when the top link got replaced with a short piece of chain.

Also when you have the top link replaced with chain you can back up to a fairly steep ditch and the back of the mower will drop down into it. Same way with backing up on a cattle pond levee. Back end of mower will be pushed up by the wheel and mow the bank much better.

One thing is that you must watch the PTO shaft when doing this and make sure it doesn't hit the body of the mower.

As for safety if you have a small tractor with a too heavy mower when you raise the 3-pt up most of the weight will still be supported by the trailing wheel.

Or just replace those flimsy bars they put on mowers that just get bent with chains.

Keep the top link, preferably hydraulic, so you can extend and let the mower float or retract and lift the rear of the mower to mow against embankments.

I wouldn't run without a top link attached. If the mower snags something and you need to quickly lift the mower, it will only lift half of it.

And that half will be the front. If what you hit is now at the rear and you raise rotary hop occurs.

Seems to me raising only the front half of the rotary mower will aim thrown material right at the operator. Just when the blade is trying to shred something solid.

I went to using a chain after sliding a few inches down an uneven slope out of control, at a slight side angle with the drive wheels in the air. Time to re-think how things were configured!
