48 backhoe deal?

I found a 48 BH at a local dealer. The BH is 1.5 years old but still new with warrany. Its been outside a long time and has alot of rust. Is 2k off list a good deal? Also wondering if condensation/water could be in cylinders that could contaminate my tractor hydr. oil? BUY OR WALK AWAY?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Two grand off the original purchase price with a full warranty? I'd sure go for it!

Surface rust isn't a big issue, except cosmetically. Of course, I'd want to mount it on a tractor, grease all the Zerk's, and see how it works. As these machines set outside most of their lives (most folks don't baby their equipment like we TBNer's do!), I wouldn't be overly concerned about the hydraulic fluid, especially if the caps are on the quick disconnect fittings. Of course, you could change the fluids as part of the deal.

So, 2 Grand off a new Backhoe sounds like a good deal to me.

Roy, thanks for your input. I'll talk to the dealer friday and see if I can sweeten up the deal(lots of touch-up paint and hydraulic oil).

Hi

I don't see anywhere in my 48 BH manual where you can change the hydraulic fluid in the hoe itself. It will get a new supply of hydraulic fluid when it gets connected to a tractor and the small amount of "old" fluid going into the tractor won't affect it because of the large amount in the sump. That's why you have filters.

I hear where you are coming from.

I will not borrow hydro implements nor allow anyone to use my tractor if there is any chance someone elses hydro fluid is going to be comingled with my own. I verify they dont hook up anything by only loaning the tractor with me as the operator or at least supervising for a few friends that are just drooling to operate it.

I am probably over cautious. And maybe there really is no danger. But I just dont want my fluids mixed with anyone elses who could have been contaminated.

Is that being rediculous, or should I maintain my current way of thinking?

I may be off base here, but the co-mingling of fluids does not concern me. However, if it did, I would change the fluid and filters more often.

If you are worried about the fluid, do this. Hook up the pressure line to your tractor, unscrew the quick connect fitting on the return hose from the backhoe to the tractor. Work all of the hydraulics. After you are comfortable with the oil that is coming out, put the end back on the return hose and connect it to the tractor.
