Ordered my new 4210 the other day. Got a Fel, ballastbox, Snowblower, and 60" mmm. Came home and called my neighbor to tell him this terrific news. He asked me if I got a block heater for it. I asked why and he told me that since it was going to sit in my garage, and that my garage is not heated over the winter (upstate NY) that I would need this.
My question is do I need a block heater, and if so ball park on cost?

I would say you don't need one. I asked this question to my dealer when I bought my 4300 this past November, and he said I shouldn't-especially with it in my garage. I live in Michigan, so we probably have similar temps most of the time.

I had absolutely no trouble starting it all winter long. It fired right up, every time, with no hesitation.

Supposedly, the engines with direct injection are easier to start than others. I'm not an expert on that, it's just what I heard.

I live in central NH and have a New Holland 29D. The first winter with the tractor, I didn't have a block heater until the beginning of February. If I plug it in for about two hours before starting the tractor starts and sounds (very little hydro whine) just like summer time. I've got to think that's a good thing ...

I have had no problem starting my Deere 4300 sitting in an unheated shed, unattached from the house, for the past 4 winters (upper midwest). It has glo plugs I can use, which cuts down on the smoking upon initial cold start-up. My take is you will not need a block heater, but for sure I wouldn't put one in until the winter weather shows that you really need it. I suspect you are hearing from someone with past experience with older diesels that did need to be warmed up. They are probably just trying to help, as we all are.

what dealer did you buy from are his prices good, block heater is listed on the JD web site

I live in the Finger Lakes region of New York State and have a 4200. It is kept in an unattached garage and it has always cranked right up no matter how cold (without a block heater). Granted, it does smoke until it warms up a bit. Before this tractor I had a JD650 for 19 years and never had any trouble firing that one up either and that was not in a garage for the first 15 years and had no block heater. I don't think you NEED one but if you WANT one.... you should get one.
