3120 gets no respect

I think this is exactly right. To me, the 3120 represents a nice chance to move into a mid frame machine for those who might be on the fence about the cost of one, but have a need for a machine that size. My only problem with the machine is that JD has positioned it too close in cost to the more powerful 3320. The difference is not great, but notable. Now that the 3203 is on the scene I think it will be harder to sell the 3120 to some people looking at that priced machine. I personally would take a 3120 everyday v a 3203, but some people will go with a little more power and a more sparsely equipped machine.

Here’s my “free” advice to John Deere Marketing.

Simplify your product offerings in the 3X20’s by:

1. Dropping the 3320 and the 3520 all together.
2. Offering only the 3120 and the 3720.
3. Setting-up an option for the 3120 for a turbo that can be field installed by the dealer or end-user. The turbo option would give the same output as the current 3520 and give the end user the ability to increase their HP and torque if they find the 3120 lacking.
4. Making the 3203 a tractor for export only or have Home Depot set-up an Agriculture Division and sell it for a value price of $9999.99 without attachments.

The logic:

The need for higher HP and torque is largely based on how much of a need there will be for “ground engaging equipment” type of attachments.

Example:

Model; Ground Engaging Equipment Usage
3120; Light
3120 w/ turbo (3520); Medium
3720; Heavy

It doesn’t mean the same ground engaging equipment can’t be used on each of the tractors listed. The lower rated ones may take more passes to accomplish what the higher rated ones can do in one pass.

For PTO driven attachments, yes the higher HP will help. It doesn’t mean the attachments won’t work, it means if you’re running it at maximum capacity it may take more time with the lower rated tractor.

For hydraulic based attachments, such as FEL or BH, there should be no differences between models since all the models have the same hydraulic flow and pressure ratings.

It’s a “win-win” for everyone:

The dealer only needs to stock the 3120 and 3720. They can also increase their revenue by charging to install the add-on turbo option for the 3120 since it will not be a factory installed option.

The customer doesn’t have to worry if the 3120 is just right or not. If after receiving the tractor they need more HP and torque for their application, the turbo upgrade option is available for a price.

(Disclaimer: I have no marketing background, use this “free” advice at your own risk. However if it works, track me down for the consulting fee.)

Your 'handle' says it all. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Choices is what it's all about, along with market share (at least the way I see it, and am sure Deere & Co. isn't flying blind here either). /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Now, what size Deere do you have? Any pics?

The best JD tractor out, the 3120. Here's some recent action photos. I keep telling it that it's not suppose to be able to do all this, but, it won't listen to me.

Great pics, DayDreamer...

Now for a little history lesson...

The 4310 had the 3TNE84 engine. The 3120 has the 3TNV84. So the 3120 has the engine that replaces the engine in my tractor. So I know that it can do great things. ( i even use mine to pull an MX6, and have hilly property...)

Ahh, you are forgetting the smallest you can get with a cab and air is the 3320. The reason I bought the 3320. Only agreeable with that option on them. Then yes this would be sinceable and with a decent dealer installed price. Alot of options I bought seem to be marked up quite a bit from both Deere and the dealer. Makes buying a machine hard because you don't have options to add hp etc. in the future if needed without buying a different machine.

I do think the 3120 is a great tractor, and the truth is, it will do almost all of what the 3720 can do. But unless I couldn't feed my kids and pay my bills, (which I wouldn't have a tractor if I couldn't) I would opt for at least a 3320. I just wouldn't want to ever wish I could have had more because I tried to save $600.00 realworld price, up front. Because when I need that extra HP I want it to be there. Same thing goes for opting for a 300x loader when for a few hundred more you could have had a 300cx Loader. For what? to save a few hundred. Not worth it to me. I really think JD should simplify their lineup, drop the 3120, and go with the 3320 Natural Aspirated, and have the 3720 Turbo as the two choices, then work out a better price for the two.

Sell the 3320 for a compromised price for the 3120.
Sell the 3720 for a compromised price for the 3520.

I would think reducing models would save JD lots of money and headache.

Same thing goes for the 300x Loader. Just drop it, and sell the 300cx, and then maybe offer a 300cxsl (Self Leveling) Loader.

Now that I think of it, same thing goes for the light duty buckets. They should all be heavy duty buckets.... Maybe not your large volume buckets, but all your general purpose buckets should be heavy duty.
