I think your dealer wanted to sell a $500 cylinder instead of a $50 weld repair.
Probably more along the lines of either a $500 cylinder and avoiding a possible bazillion $ lawsuit if something went to heck and hurt someone (not that it would). Not unusual at the dealership level to not do these kind of repairs. Welding shop, machine shop is the best option if repairing.
