1050 with courage running rich

I've got a 1050 with courage engine with 3 hours on it. already there is a black sooty deposit around the exhaust discharge area and it smells "rich" and fumy when run in the shed. The manual says that there is no mixture adjustment on the carb. Two queries - Does this mean there is no adjustment or is the adjustment hidden and secondly has anyone else noticed this?

Where does it smell rich, at idle or full throttle? The kohlers do stink at anything other than full throttle.

You may want to check and make sure the choke is adjusted properly. Make sure it is opening the choke full when pushed all the way in. You may have to loossen the choke cble to se if it will open any more. A build up of carbon on the muffler assy. is normal. Also ; there is no adjustments on the carb.

I've checked it out and it looks like dqdave1 is correct. The choke does not shut off properly - must have been missed by those quality driven guys at the factory. I've altered the cable so now the knob is slightly out when the choke is fully off. Thanks.
