Happy Holiday to all,

My 029 starts ok, a little boggy the first 3-5 sec's, but then starts performing normally. Then after 3-5 minutes, it's like it runs out of gas and dies. Cannot restart at all regardless of how many times I try.

Filter is pretty clean, s-plug good, gas might not be totally the best, but the 023 gets the same age/type/kind of gas and never has the same problem and always keeps operating. Have had the 029 for about 12-13 yrs.

My usage is very sporadic at best and may not be used for months, then 1-2 times one weekend or a lot one weekend when I start cutting for firewood.

Thank you very much for your advice and pls let me know if you have any questions? I really look forward to getting the 029 back-up and running fulltime.

Best Regards,
tstex

Do you still have a spark when the saw cuts out after warming up?

I am no expert, but my guess is that you have an ignition problem.

check the fuel line right above the fuel tank. The stihls are bad at cracking the fuel line in the sharp bend area and may not leak fuel at first but will suck air and run erratic. Got a neighbor that locked up his 029 due to a cracked fuel line.

in order of probability:
1) ignition coil is opening up once the saw at operating temperature, leading to loss of spark. you can check this pretty easily. make the problem happen, withdraw the plug, and see if you still get a spark.
2) impulse line is cracked, leading to fuel starvation under load. hard to check, but a new impulse line is a couple of bucks and they have a tendency to dry out and crack after a few years.

anyway, hope that is a start.

there are tons of folks there that can help you out. you can also get an IPL (illustrated parts list) and FSM (factory service manual) in the tacked "beg for manuals" thread.
