Thoughts on Big Ass Fans

When I was still installing fire sprinklers, the sparkies would have to install a shunt trip to shut the fan off if the fire sprinklers activated because of the obstruction from the big fan.
But talk about dispersal! :ROFLMAO: Water probably goes everywhere but the fire, directly under the sprinkler.

No experience with them other than they seem to do a good job and you see them in LOTS of commercial applications. They don't look cheap to buy OR cheaply made.

I'm glad to hear it!

There is nothing quite like having a fire fanned with extra oxygen to really get things going is there?

But back to the OP's question, about BA fans, like @HawkinsHollow I have only seen/used them in large open industrial or warehouse type spaces, where they do a much better job at moving large volumes of air slowly than the alternatives.

All the best,

Peter

If you are looking for reliability in a fan made for interior residential use you can find something for MUCH cheaper, probably without sacrificing reliability and longevity . Go to just about any older house and you are going to see ceiling fans that are 20-30 years old still in operation. Maybe that is a function of "they don't make them like they used to" though. Honestly, there is not much to them. We have ceiling fans in just about every room in our house and our screen porch, wouldn't want to live without them. And like others have stated they run a lot! We went with MinkaAire. They are less than 2 years old, but I am hoping for many years of service.

Having taken a couple of fans apart, I am firmly in the "they don't make 'em like they used to" camp, but that is good and bad in my book. New ones are quieter, more energy efficient, move air more efficiently, and have a wider range of speed control, with electronics, and different motor construction. So, pluses and minuses in my book. Rebuilding the old ones is usually pretty easy, but one has to be willing to do it. There are some very interesting motor designs on some of the old fans.

All the best,

Peter

Our fan took a crap in the bedroom and was looking at big ass fans. Anyone have any input. Looks like they have a 15 year warranty. My boss has them in his shop and they move a lot of air
Never seen them in the residential market, but from what I hear, no complaints in the commercial market.

First time I saw them looking at a warehouse, I remember thinking "man, that's one big ass fan". At least 20' and when I looked up and saw "Big ass fan" I couldn't but laugh, why I always remembered them.

First time I saw one, did the same. LOL. Exactly how I remember them.

That reaction lets them bleed your wallet. I almost fell for it. Check out MacroAir to save about 25%, AIR from ~ 2001.

It is also humorous to see them called out on building construction documents.

I'd never have a reason to buy something that big personally.
but if you ever did, or had occasion to recommend, BA would be at the tip of your mind I bet
MacroAir is the originator of HVLS.

Generally, in my line of work, it's the engineers who specify what they want. Not that they really know what they're specifying other than copying a pasting ;)

Now that is their biggest competitor called CheapAss Fans!
Nah, they each cater to a different clientele. BAF is for high end appications. CAF sells to people like me.;)

If you're looking for a good ceiling fan, check out Fanimation. My new house has 7 of them, 4 indoor and 3 outdoor. They seem like a very well made fan. Quiet, good airflow, no wobble.
