The problem we have up here in Canada is, we have some many idiots that don,t have critical thinking skills. They will vote for whichever party gives them a free hotdog, and diet coke.

& you are welcome to every one of them. But it's really not their fault ... for 50 years schools haven't taught critical thinking or independence ... only conformity. Parents didn't bother getting involved since schools "knew what was best". Consequently we have created a society that is gullible, lazy, and feels entitled to the finer things life has to offer with no understanding of what it takes to get those things

My son goes to a private school and is an excellent student. He's just about at the top of his class. I was talking to him about his mid-terms yesterday and he mentioned something that shocked me. His science teacher is allowing all students to make a 3x5 note card to be used during the test. Students are allowed to write notes on the card, front and back. The notes are taken from a "study guide" the teacher handed out. I believe that ensures all students make a good grade on the upcoming test.

It depends on the class, but it might be that the teacher is more interested in evaluating problem solving rather than memorization. For something like physics I think it's much more important that a student can attack the problem correctly and apply the correct equations. Memorizing the equations isn't particularly useful in real life. Knowing how to solve problems is.

That is a problem everywhere. I always say people will vote for the candidate that promises them the biggest piece of the pie. Politicians are well aware of this and use it constantly. It was JFK who said ask not what your country can do for you ...I don't think that would get any votes with the young people today :(

Well, I guess I would have to get my magnifying glass out and read his note card to find out what's on it! I understand what you're saying but I don't think it applies in this particular situation.

I think every test should be open book ! Teach students to use available resources, look at the problem and try and figure it out, not try and memorize everything. Smart students academically certainly do not make the best employees. As an example, I have witnessed first hand a group of 30 teachers, all with varying degrees, and not one of them had a clue about boosting a vehicle on a very cold winter afternoon. I got a call, and helped many of them get their vehicles started. There is book smart, and world smart. I would choose the latter as an employee every time. If I ask someone what time it is, I don,t need people that can tell me how a watch is made, when all I need is someone that actually knows how to read a clock, and tell me the time.

Another example is how history is taught and tested. Unless it's changed, it was all about memorizing names and dates which are the least important things to carry forward into life. What matters are the circumstances and choices that were made. What was life like during the event? What were people upset about? What was their strategy or solution? Did it work? What were the unintended consequences? Those are the things I want students to understand because it will make them better citizens. But it's easier to write a test that evaluates whether they've memorized unimportant facts.

I hated history classes in school because even back then I could see how unimportant it was to memorize when the Treaty of Versailles was signed. As an adult I enjoy reading about history because I can focus on the context and lessons learned.

My current peeve is Fedex claiming they can't deliver a package due to local weather event. Evidently sunny and 35 degrees is a local weather event preventing a delivery attempt. So waiting on my packages that originally was suppose to be delivered on Saturday. But due to snow was postponed until Monday came and sun and cool temps but that wasn't good enough either. So waiting for another delivery attempt today at sunny and 50 so I will see if they actually bring my packages today. And hopefully before 10:30PM like 2 weeks ago with my Walmart shipment.

And now my delivery time has changed from 10:50-2:50 to by end of day. So here we go again.

Amazon left a package outside behind our business after we were closed yesterday. I found it on my way in the back door this morning. There were quite a few liquids that were frozen solid.

I feel a disturbance in the Force ... it was like millions of people simultaneously screaming in frustration ... we had better delay RandyT's shipment.

UPS sent me a delayed shipment notice, they hardly ever delay here.

When I checked, Home Despot hasn't given them the pkg yet.

But somehow it's shipped.
