Glad he okay....indeed hard lesson. :(

I think the trick should have been to get out of the skid, and then direct the tractor some place safe, for example up and out of the ravine to the right. Unfortunately it can be hard to do that split second thinking.

Kinda amazing someone just happened to be there recording with a camera, held steady and able to even zoom in as it went over the cliff. As far as what he could have done, his brain was overloaded with the immediate situation of getting off the thing if needed as it slid to the cliff. Pilots often just stop flying airplanes and ride to the crash site when in panic situations. The brain can only process so much data and is more easily overloaded than people realize.

I've watched the clip a few times. There is no indication of how or why he got to the start place. He begins the clip with the right hand on the fender, and appears to be relaxed and casually steering with his left hand. Then he bales out at the last possible moment as the tractor tumbles over the dropoff.

I'm beginning to lean towards this entire thing being a setup fake. He probably already knew that he could induce a catastrophic slide if he just drove (a perhaps stolen tractor) over the ridge into the ravine at that point, as well as knowing the tractor would tumble over a dropoff.

YouTube GOLD.
