What battery charger do you use?

Use on DW'S car, 3500 pu and the tractors. Keeps them topped off.

I've had two of those, both open box... the first lasted about 4 years until it let the smoke out of something... got another one because the size is good and it is super convenient and well I found one for like $20 so was hard to pass on

UPDATE: I recently ordered a Schumacher SC1280 4-in-1 charger that is supposed to be compatible with AGM or FLA batteries. It also has desulfation/maintenance/3A & 15A charging. Should be here soon. Will post results! Incidentally: I have a Schumacher SC-600A charger that I hooked up to an old AGM Excel battery. It reached "fully charged" status in less than 15 minutes, at 2 amps!

Im posing to say that agm feature will pay off in longevity. It shortens the life to charge them improperly although it not apparent. It really matters on a four wheeler or lawnmower battery. I like agms but they do require a little special treatment. Keep us posted on your new fancy charger

If a good battery is discharging, fix the problem. If the battery is bad, replace it.

I have a very robust set of jumpers for when "do-do" happens. Recently the battery in the L4240 gave up. Trailblazer rescued it from outside the shed even though the tractor was nose-in.

Both of my chargers are older. I have a Die Hard (Schumacher) 2/10/50 auto charger with a setting for agm. The other is a wheeled Schumacher 2/10/40/200 that will also do 6v. For maintainers, I have 3 wall wart Battery Minders.

I have an old charger I haven't used for charging in 20 years but keep it because it has a "start the motor" feature. Don't ,see this on modern chargers unless you want something commercial in size and price.

There's no problem to fix. They all discharge all by themselves and some do it faster than others, typically at a rate of about 5% per month.

So true chim. Sounds like you charge them on the go! I mostly charge something when I let it set still to long. I guess I’m guilty of having to many toys. But I’m as you are, in my seventies. Still enjoying it!

AGM charges slower to a lower voltage than LA batteries. Charging AGM on LA settings with shorten the useful life of the AGM battery

I believe you are thinking of Gel batteries, They charge to a lower voltage and are very easily damaged by overcharging with a charger designed for flooded lead-acid (FLA) batteries.

There are some chargers designed for flooded lead-acid batteries that will charge at high voltages (as high as 15-17 volts). I avoid these as they are not good for regular FLA batteries or for AGM batteries.

Some AGM batteries charge using the same bulk charging and float voltages as flooded lead-acid batteries, others recommend charging at slightly higher voltages than FLA.

For the AGM brands which recommend the slightly higher voltage, using a charger designed for flooded lead-acid batteries will simply under-charge them slightly. (That’s not the greatest thing for them, but far better than leaving them more heavily discharged.)

Anything that's competent on flooded lead acid should be fine with AGM. If you need mainly a charge maintainer, anything from CTEK is the only choice. They do everything well. CTEK has a nice plug-in assortment of accessories such as ring terminals, alligator clamps, plugs, etc. Helps if you're someone who values a near-factory appearance.

I have one AGM battery (Bosch) in a generator that's over 10yo and maintained with a CTEK 800ma charger. Still tests new. For new applications, I don't use anything other than Fullriver. Best AGM vehicular batteries made.

I purchased one from NAPA in Ontario Canada. Under $100. 2,10 and 20A. Triangular. Does the 3 types of Batteries. Trickle Chargers and Battery Maintainers are not the same animal.

AGM batteries have the same charging profile as flooded lead acid (FLA) batteries so any charger will work

Lithium battery note.... I never charge any lithium battery with anything except the charger it came with. Most lithium battery fires are from using the wrong charger. (or damaged batteries.)

I have a number of NOCO Genius 1 battery maintainers. Nominally only 1 amp but that is all you need to maintain a battery. Has modes for lead-acid, AGM, and lithium. One of the differences is the voltage cutoff between charging and maintaining. In lithium mode it cuts out completely because continuous low current is bad for lithium. If the battery drops to a certain threshold it resumes charge.
