In 2017 (I think) we spent a month in Europe, driving an S Class Mercedes ("cheap upgrade" because what I had reserved was not available). Sounded and drove like a Gas engine. I only ever put gasoline in it. There was no "WARNING - DIESEL ONLY" label on the fill area. It was a great car. Maybe why I bought a CLS 550 after we got home...
Anyways, speaking of after we got home, I looked up the model number to get more specs on it. I knew that in Europe, most, even "Luxury" sedans like an S-Class have two wheelbases, whereas in the USA they only sell the "oversize" version... Long story short, I could not find a gasoline powered version of the model we had. I kept expecting to get a call, email, or jackboots-at-the-door demanding I pay $20k for an engine to replace the one I had ruined. Still to this day I do not know the actual situation. But, pretty sure I am past the statue of limitations for "destruction of rental vehicle"...
