I bought an old baler a few days ago. As I was looking at it. This is the bale length counter.

Looking at it, that is an old flat file that somebody has welded onto the bale length counter. I would have hit the edges with a grinder. No idea why the edge is so wavy. Perhaps the person that did it failed to do a good heat treat/temper after welding.

Looks to me like the original smooth edged part was slipping in the drive wheels so they added a file to get a better grip.

"Trip Arm". New Holland. The little disc is definitely serrated. I thought the arm was too, but perhaps not all of them. I'll have to watch it some. It appears to be functioning properly, but my bales aren't quite exactly perfect (for a 60 year old baler).

A couple of days after buying the baler, I discovered that my Ford 1715 just wasn't enough to do the mowing and raking, so I had to come up with a tractor overnight (nothing else was running). And ended up with an International 600.

A bit of duct tape on the upper air cleaner (pre-filter). I think that is supposed to be an oil bath on the lower half of the air cleaner. I'm not sure how well duct tape holds oil...

MacGyver... PUT DOWN THAT ROLL OF DUCT TAPE.

Anyway, after hunting for the lower half of the air cleaner "oil cup", and coming up with NOTHING, I had some divine inspiration.

That looked rather bowl shaped.

I should probably have my kitchen privileges revoked. Anyway, a quick trip to Goodwill, and measuring a bunch of bowls and pans... No more duct tape on the lower half. Stainless steel shouldn't rust out.

I still have to address that prefilter, but that may come after Hay Season.

that’s classic farmer engineering right there—grab whatever’s nearby and make it work. flat file turned bale counter arm? why not. the wavy edge is a mystery though, maybe heat distortion from the weld or they torched it in a hurry. either way, it’s got personality now.
