Does Idaho have that law too? I grew up in CA and I remember when the speed limit was 55 for everything, and then they raised it to 65, but if you were towing a trailer, then it was still 55.

Every time I towed a trailer, I broke that law. I never got a ticket, but the cops would flash their headlights at me or pull up beside me and either honk their horn or turn on their interior light as they passed me. I always took that as a warning, so I slowed down. I don't remember anybody ever getting a speeding ticket for towing faster than 55, but I'm sure it happened.
No towing laws here. Me, i always try to keep up with traffic if towing the flatbed or box trailer. By i do drive slower when hauling the horse trailer.

I have a camera inside the horse trailer, and i can see the horses actions when turning, etc. it tends to make me more cautious.

Heck, were one of those crazy states that alloy you to pull 3 trailers.

We have people show up at horse shows with a huge rv, pulling a horse trailer thats pulling a boat for use after the show

Is that still the law in CA? You can only drive 55mph when towing a trailer?
Yep and after pandemic years with little enforcement the CHP is again out in force…

I'm seeing more contraptions called sled decks I believe to load 2 snow machines on a deck above the bed sides of a pickup truck. Instead of using a 2 place snowmobile trailer. if you used one for a sxs I could see you might need to get a permit or at least pre plan a route avoiding low bridges. I think you'd definitely be top heavy.
MANY years ago, I used 2x4's on their flat and plywood on top of the bed sides of my pickup to have a place to haul sno-mobiles.

It worked just fine.

I'm sure it did, was referring to if someone tried to load a significantly top heavier side x side on top of a trucks bedrails. Probably attempted both successful and unsuccessfully.

Ive seen the pickups with the bed in back that carry 2 snowmobiles. They piss me off when they hit home depot and take up 3 parking spots :giggle:

Hello all,

So, I really could use a utility side by side for around my 8 acres. Mainly for fence repair, general maintenance, irrigation repairs and target setting out to my 200 yard range. And of course some trail riding while camping. I am looking at five different machines. Most are three seaters. No need for a six seater. Here they are not listed in any particular order;

1 CFMoto UForce U10 Pro
2 Kawasaki Ridge/Ranch Edition
3 Polaris Range 1000
4 Honda Pioneer 1000-5
5 Can Am Defender X MR

I know there are others on the market. I was really interested in a Massimo T-Boss 1000, but they are not available in Kalifornia. My main focus here is ease of service, riding comfort and durability. So, if you happen to have one of these machines, can you kindly chime in as to what you do and don't like about it. I have ridden in a Honda Pioneer before and it was a great machine. I kicked the tires on a Kawasaki Ridge and it looks like a great machine, but getting to the air filter looks like a pain in the rear. I have yet to sit in any of the other three. Mainly because there are none on dealer floors in the Stockton area. I really want to look at the CFMoto. A Tracy dealer is expecting some in early May.

Ok, thanks guys/gals. B.
We have a 2020 Polaris Ranger Crew 1000 EPS that has become indispensable on our homestead. We use it for fence repair, feeding the horses, hauling firewood, hauling dirt with its dump bed, moving the multiple trailers (horse, dump bed, double axle 18’ flat bed) around the property with its 2” receiver, hauling water for our ducks, fishing excursions to the creek, trail rides with the kids and even the occasional trip to the local ice cream counter at the general store down the road. It has preformed spectacularly with only basic routine maintenance. I was very skeptical about the price (we bought it used; 1 year old with 130 hrs on it) but it has been worth every single penny.

We're with you. The utility found in UTV or ATV is had to beat.

I've got an EV SxS. We don't trail ride and if we did, it would just be across the road where neighbors have some trails. It maxes out at about 35 mph.

It works like a champ, though. You do hear more than the tires. The rattles and squeaks that are masked by engines are more noticeable in an EV.

If it wasn't for the trail portion, I'd recommend it to OP. Especially being in CA. Its only a matter of time before Sacramento outlaws most ATVs or SxSs because of emissions. Really surprised they haven't already.

True. There ARE some really nice gas rigs still available in California. I have contacted CFMoto about their products. They said their dealer network would be the best place for a time frame. Right none of their rides I'm interested in are available here. B.

Like hondas almost as much as my Yamahas lots of folks prefer glass windshields it's pricy but pretty immune to scratching I'll stay with hard coated polycarbonate windshields which have have had great life, durability ,and results with them. imo ability to vent it either flipping it up, out, down or built in sliding vents is a great option. Anyways a roof and windshield makes a huge difference if riding in rain or colder weather. I use a cheap hand crank wiper on my windshields another bonus having ability to drill a small mounting hole for wiper in polycarbonate. Hand crank wipers have been more than sufficient and gives a passenger something to do lol. Next sxs I'll probably get a far less expensive soft top wonder what others that have them think of them?
I go back and forth on the Poly Vs. Glass thing all the time. B.

If you ride only flatlands then a narrow side by side is fine. If you ride in the mountains - they are trouble because they roll so easily. One of the reasons I chose the Can-am I have is because it is wide - and stable in off-camber situations. True, it can't fit on narrow trails or in between trees like a narrow unit but the last thing I want to do is roll down the side of a mountain. Watch this video at about 5:20 to see what happens with a narrow side by side. That spot would be no problem in my Can-am. And the video shows the terrain I ride all the time.

WOW, that guy was VERY lucky. If that boulder wasn't there, he prolly would have been killed tumbling down that mountain. Here I am thinking the units I'm interested in maybe to wide. Then you post this video of a narrower unit. I guess it boils down to the right tool for the job. B.

no kidding, did you see him stick his arm out like he was going to catch the rig with his wrist??

That's at the age you were invincible.

Would you load a snow mobile now like that?

I think even the owners manuals warn of sticking limbs out of rops on a sxs? The seat belts will prevent you from being thrown out if you roll. Considering most sxs weigh in around 1500+ a limb trying to catch a rolling sxs is futile and dangerous. Remember when I started taking the kids out on 4 wheelers and snowmobiles. A close family member wanted me to attach seatbelts for my young passengers. Definitely didn't, considering it would be safer to be thrown off a 4 wheeler or snowmobile than be fastened to something over 500 lbs without rops. I've rather recently have read about a few tragic sxs accidents where the operator and passengers drowned after they couldn't unbuckle from a submerged sxs. Definitely go at a reasonable safe speed when fording unfamiliar or driving next to water. Helmets are important and work in my opinion.

Heck, it took me a mow or two with the new ZTR to lean my folded ROPS would still catch on some low branches. If ya gotta duck, don't go under it.

That implies that it wasn't a safe thing to do, it was, and so given the same conditions I had then, yes, I would do it now.

Those days I lived where we had a lot of snow, and it was easy to load right off a snowbank. These days I live where we don't get much snow at all.

Something I learned or maybe saw yrs ago is before I back my truck to a snow bank I'll drive over snow bank a few times with snow machine. Packs down a trail and I'll familiarize myself with areas I I might get stuck in. I could see how loading disasters might happen if I didn't use my method. Usually haul my snowmobiles on a trailer anyway.
