After years of hand jacking square bales from the trailer into horse stalls for storage, I bought a hay grapple to unload the trailer. Made it easier to stack them in the aisle next to the stall door but still labor intensive to put them in the stalls. I am building a new 30'X40'X14' hay barn to store hay. Foundation is in and the crew showed up this morning to start construction of the metal building. Will have 3 12'X12' rollup doors and a 3' walk door. There are 2 ridge vents and 4 skylights. Insulated with metal 8' up on the inside walls.

Plan is to store 360 bales in the hay barn, plus the trailer. Will just move a few bales at a time over to the stables as needed. Here is the foundation, just waiting for metal to go up.

About 2 weeks to complete it. My contractor has a 3-man crew here today. He has another crew finishing up another job. They may or may not come here after that job or go to the next one. He stays pretty busy. This is his third job for me. He built my 30'X40'X12" carport and added 720 square feet to my shop building to create an office for our stained-glass business.

Good start for the first day above the slab. All steel fabrication is being done onsite.

Wow, that thing is built. You don't get much snow down there right, what is the designed wind load estimate?

I don't remember the exact number. We do get the occasional hurricane force wind gusts when one tracks north from the Gulf. It is designed so if I ever need to add on it will take the load.

Could you provide the number of your contractor? I am about to build something similar and it sure is hard to find a competent contractor.

Great looking building!!!!

I've been going back and forth on how I want to store my hay. My biggest concern is having hay in the back of the barn and not using it all that year, then getting new hay the next year and not being able to get the the old hay.

With doors on both ends of the building, that should make it easy to get to the old hay, and still be able to fill it up with new hay.

That is my thinking, being able to work the stack from both ends. The one side with only one door is for the trailer.

Very impressive and looks like a quality build. I'm jealous of the flat areas you have to build wherever you want it seems.

We use about 1 bale a day of coastal. I can store 90 coastal bales in one of the 12'X12' stalls in the stables. Using the tractor and hay grapple I can put the 10 bales in the aisle next to the stall door but then I have to hand jack them into the stall and stack them 5 high. After the hay barn is finished I will stack them using the tractor and hay grapple. Then once a week use the tractor and bucket to bring 8 bales over to stack in the stall.

My hay supplier is in Chandler. I reserve X amount of bales at the beginning of the year. He stores them in his big hay barn and I picked them up as I need them. Now I will be able to make 3 trips of 120 bales at a time and be done with it for the year.

The 3 string alfalfa bales go in another stall that we use for feed and supplements. They weight 100# or so. The feed store charges a $25 delivery fee to deliver 20 and stack them in the stall. That's a good deal for me after having back surgery.

They continue to add metal to the front and the roof. They have 2 of the skylights up.
