Lifting safe - Ballast Box needed?

I would get a couple of old drums and fill them with water and lift them each drum being 400 or so

Worst case, pick up the safe off of the truck with the tractor; have the truck leave, then lower the loader and hand truck it.

But seriously I think you'll be fine. Drop the loader as low as possible without hitting the ground when moving, don't make any sharp turns, and to really slow if it feels light at all.

OP mentioned 3046R tractor. The preferred loader for that tractor is the 320R, although he could have gone cheap and bought the more economical (phased out) 300R.

OP also mentioned a different loader which also shows up on TractorData as the H165 FEL. Threw me off, and now wonder if the 320R gives more (or less) lift to the JD 3046R tractor.

I am having a gun safe being delivered next week and have opted to lift it off the delivery truck myself to reduce the delivery cost (they won't have to bring a fork lift with them)

They don't have a lift gate truck?

When I have freight deliveries, they have a big upcharge for lift gate service, so I always opt to use my forks. One of these days I will probably order something too heavy for my little tractor.

Do you have a tractor and no rear attachments whatsoever? Just put something on the back.

But barring the limited details, there are too many variables to answer this question...
We dont know if the tires are loaded
We dont know if you are using bucket and strapping the safe
OR if you have clamp on pallet forks
OR if you have actual quick attach forks
OR if the area is even level where this lift needs to take place.

But, do you have any implements for the rear of the tractor at all? If so, why even question it. Put something on. There is ZERO harm having something on the back while unloading. But how are things gonna go and whats it gonna cost if your tractor WONT lift it, and you have to take the time to then attach something, or worst case, have to reschedule a delivery?

Ballast Boxes are handy...don't take up much room...very compact on the 3PH (unlike most implements) and can be used as a carry-all if one uses weight that can be removed.
Mine, which I've had for many years, is filled with sand. I'd estimate the weight at 600-700 pounds.
The best part, IMHO, is the compactness...
