How much does it cost to build a pole barn and what kind is best..

I caught the power company replacing poles in my area and asked if I could have some and they gladly gave me more than enough for the job. As I was setting the posts my neighbor stopped in and asked if I would like to have some steel for my project as he had taken down a large building and never put it up and would like to get rid of it, score. There was more than enough support beams and sheeting to do a 24X40 pole barn. My total expenses came to around $250 for bolts and screws. I used my TYM 234 with an extension on the bucket for lifting beams and did all the work myself. Pic is prior to putting up the trim but you get the idea.

Thats how I got my poles at first, but now when I went to ask, they had cut the poles into 5 foot or less. Cant even use them for the fence....

Need to get 20 footers by 12, and then you dont need the poles in the center.

This! I ultimately built a 40x100 when I thought 40x50 would be plenty. I’m browsing this sub because I’m thinking it’s time to upgrade again. Definitely add a Leanto. I didn’t and I regret it. They’re always something to stick under there.

Yeah, throw that stuff away. What ever it is, it probably cost less than the barn you built to put it in.
Not only do you have to pay for the barn, you have to pay property taxes, you have to pay insurance, you have to fix the leaks that will come, or paint something. The one thing I value more than anything as I grow old, is my time. When it comes to "stuff", less is more.

$77k for a 40x56x12, insulated with full concrete floor. 16x10 overhead door, an 18’ long porch and (9) 2x4’ insulated windows. Snow guard, 6” seamless gutters etc.
Some storage, but mainly a workshop for the apiary and motorcycles at this point.
What kind is best? Probably depends on your needs. I went a little larger than I needed, and planned to have the entire floor concrete, because there is a potential I will want this for future business opportunities.

The only nice metal pole barns with concrete floors around here are owned by weekenders. The real farmers keep their tractors in ancient tractor sheds with natural cedar posts and dirt floors, and probably as many just sit out in the yard.

That's a problem, as all the heavy trucks and concrete trucks kept sinking into the black sand when doing the house, and to try and drive into the fields...ouch....

Also storing my tractor under a pole barn. I was looking for something to "mostly" block wind, rain, and sun without being a total pain, or very expensive, to install.

Found Sailrite - Privacy fence fabric It's 12 foot by 33 yards. It's what they use to screen large construction sites; durable enough it can be "reused".

Granted, my pole barn is "temporary" for a few years until I build the shop ... but I was thrilled with this product. Stretches enough to be easy to make look decent. Looks decent. Cheap. Keeps the weather out perfectly.
