Skidsteer rentals

A local outfit rents heavy duty skidsteer stuff. Usually come with a big FEL but also have a very heavy duty bush hog.

Am contemplating rental, probably with the bucket first to get some big stumps out.

Then have them come and detach the bucket and put on the heavy duty bush hog.

How many have never used one of these and started using on very steep slopes.

Where we were loading and hauling wood pieces the wife had cut up this morning is the main spot we need this thing for. Too steep for the tractor, and my tractor is not up to getting very big stumps out, particularly on such a slope.

Also have a line on a guy who has this equipment and hires out. Wife talked to his father yesterday when she saw him at the gate across the cul-de-sac from us. The rental costs are quite high. Probably not too much more to hire it done.

Removing stumps with a loader bucket is very difficult if not impossible. A backhoe or small excavator is the preferred tool

Can you rent a tracked machine with a forestry mulcher?

With that you would clear anything up to the capacity of the mulcher, around 4", then drop the big trees to pull out.

Buckets don’t do well for removing stumps. Been there.

I bought an excavator. People speak well about stump buckets, though.

the type of stump you are removing should help define the proper equipment. Tap roots are tough.

Hello Ralph. Not sure what your level of experience is in operating a skid steer, but here is something to consider. Slopes can be very dangerous places to operate machinery. Learning a new machine and its capabilities is something best done on flat ground. A skilled operator knows his machine well and will know what is safely possible and what is not. Also not knowing how steep your slope is this is purely a suggestion. Might be safer and faster to hire it out...?

A skid steer with a stump bucket works pretty good if it’s got the traction to work. If it’s steep or muddy it’s not so good. A mini excavator would be way better. But as you mentioned renting is pretty expensive. You’d probably be better to just hire it done.

I've got a skid steer, and it doesn't like slopes. Your entry and exits need to be specifically planned, and they need to be thought out as to how they are going to change if and when you have a load on the front.

I've found with a wheeled skidsteer or tracked skidloader it is often easier to push on the tree itself to make it and the stump go over and then use the bucket to push on the stump to get it out. You are limited on the size of the tree and stump obviously and operating on steep slopes takes it own set of experience, wheeled machines don't often do well on slopes that are slick, tracked machines sometimes do and sometimes don't.

Most rental places wouldn't come and take the bucket off and attach the next piece, it isn't a hard job to do and it would be an added expense for them to come do it for you.

No but they’re going to charge a separate daily rent for the mower. Getting it at a later time might make sense depending on the transportation cost involved.

I understand that playing with somebody else's toys is fun, but it can be expensive. When you figure in all the add-ons and the learning curve, I'll bet hiring it done is not much more expensive. I'd try to get somebody to give me an estimate for the work. Trying to dig out stumps with a FEL is tedious and prone to breakage. If you can't push it over, it is time for an excavator. The "stump bucket" looks interesting but loader frames and hyd. are easily bent.

Depends on the skill of the operator. I remove stumps all the time with a standard bucket.
Give yourself some more seat time and you might be able to someday, too.

Just posted this on another thread.. Here's the biggest of two trees I dropped today. This one was 45" osage orange at the ground and took me about 18 minutes to lay over. Some of the roots were 9-10" wide. I've sped the video to 3x speed.

Here's video of the 2nd hedge tree. This one was 30". Took just under 6 minutes to drop with the stump bucket. Video in real speed on this one.

How about this oak? Also taken out with a stump bucket. A large ctl and stump bucket can take out most trees in the 20 to 30" range in 5 to 10 min.

I have no doubt what you can accomplish with a stump bucket. I’ve used one. I was quoting Haydudes post about using the regular size bucket.

Agreed. A full size bucket is slow and not a good tool for stump removal.
