Do backyard tractors need grease?

The trade norm is every 8-10 hours for greasing.
A battery powered gun makes the job almost fun.
Down side is getting grease on clothing and being subjected to the wife's tirade when that grease permeates the tightly whiteites.

Ok. I guess the Milwaukee site is wrong.

I read this statement; "The tool’s 2-speed design offers users the ability to select between max pressure and max flow rate."

My Dewalt is variable speed through the trigger like a drill. There's no dial to fiddle with.
Ya its actually 2 different things. You have 2 speeds, then a grease volume setting. I was referring to the volume setting.

"The M18™ Cordless 2-Speed Grease Gun delivers maximum pressure and unmatched versatility, offering an industry leading 10,000 PSI max operating pressure and a patent pending pre-set grease counter that allows service and maintenance professionals to dispense precise amounts of grease."

Am I the only one that actually enjoys greasing the tractor or backhoe using the good old lever style grease gun and get hands all greasy? No electric grease gun, no fancy lock n lube stuff. Just a regular grease gun. I do have a pneumatic one but don't really enjoy using it much.
Have you ever used a battery powered grease gun?
I have several manual grease guns, and one pneumatic.
Once you use a battery powered one, and with Lock-N Lube, you will never go back!
Perhaps they are not common in Portugal?

Yes those are available, however I just never bothered to invest on the battery grease gun. I've thought about something like the Lock N lube but decided against it, since I found another standard grease gun tip laying around to replace a bad one I had.

Both the tractor, backhoe and electric forklift (which used like one a year), just take one, maybe two pumps. It's not really an hard or exhausting job by any means.

I don't even use cartridges for the grease gun. I just fill it by hand from the 5 kg pail. I did read somewhere that I would get more grease for the money by buying one of those 12 cartridge boxes, so I might consider changing to that once I finish what I have.

As a kid (9-15 range) dad owned an IH dealership. One of the things I could do to help out around the shop was grease zerks. Once we get our shop built, I am looking forward doing it for myself, actually.

I am like ptsg and use hand pump. I have both lever and pistol style. Tractor and loader around 20 zerks so not that many.
Farmer I help has Milwaukee electric and we grease his implements every time we fill tractor with fuel. I believe pros and cons to both hand operated and battery operated. Battery operated I have difficulty telling if pumping grease when cold and hand operated sometimes difficult to get tip on zerks and have room to pump the handle.

Man you do love grease! That’s cool!

ANY machine that has grease zerks needs frequent greasing.
Once for every 8 hours of use is considered normal, but considering operating conditions, greasing more frequently could be useful.
A battery powered grease gun (Milwaukee or similar) is a wonderful tool, and the OP should consider a ($30) "Lock-N-Lube" also.
Lock and Lube is necessary.

I don't get the tractor until the shop is built to park it in. It will be another year before we live onsite. We have to keep it secured.
I hear that the drug epidemic is causing huge crime spikes in rural areas. That, and leftist attacks on police, and the justice system.

A friend in Vermont has a nasty problem with theft, and trespassers on her property.

Wherever there is a grease nipple it should be greased about every ten hours or sooner.

I’m considering an electric grease gun as the handles seem to be getting very hard to squeeze. ( The new grease must be a lot less viscous than it used to be! )

Frequent greasing also keeps all the nipples/passages from getting hard and having to clean them.
I had one zerk on the front end loader part plugged. The mechanic had to apply heat to break it all up. I now am **** retentive about greasing.

One question.

If the unit is sitting without being used, how often should you grease?

Funny. I've been using grease guns of all types for over 50 years and never had one.
Useful, convenient, helpful? Possibly. Necessary? Not even close. There are zerks that are inaccessible Lock & Lube for that matter.

I do like using my Lock & Lube but it does not fit everything. I have made adapters that solve that but it is extra parts to keep up with. I will say it still is better then fighting tight areas with the twist type.

I grease my equipment regularly. I have a Milwaukee 18V grease gun. I also have a Lock-N-Lube. The LNL is on a manual gun because there are only a couple or three zerks where it really helps. There are quite a few recessed zerks on the FEL that the LNL can not get to.

I grease every ten hours or so. However - it's just plain 'ol routine maintenance and not something normally discussed with regularity. You know what I mean ...... I will ask - "John, how is your wheat crop doing?" NOT - Hey, John - when was the last time you greased your tractor and how did it go.

:ROFLMAO: That's funny.

Useless garble to turn a fault into a "feature". It's not leading anything.

Dear maintenance professional; How many times a day do you have to fiddle with that dial? Do you weigh the grease? How do you charge for the grease--By the pound or ounce?

:ROFLMAO:

Ya it sounds wordy I agree. It was nice to be able to dial in they grease output the way I use the tool though, especially because it is electric and I can’t control the volume/pressure of each stroke. Other than that maybe if I had some specialized fittings that required more pressure less volume it “could” be beneficial to have it.

My dewalt doesn’t have that ability but I see no use for it. Some pins are squirting out with 2 pumps and some pins take 10 pumps. What’s so hard about holding down the trigger until you have the amount of grease you want?
