Missouri Highway Dept. wanted I-70 to be a toll road. Fee would be $50 for cars driving from STL to KC and $100 for trucks. Money would go to “needed highway repairs”.

Went to a vote. Lost. Went to another vote. Lost.

Then Highway Dept. said OK, it’s clear the voters of MO do not want toll roads.

But, ha ha ha, no vote is need if we sold I-70 to a private company who would then charge tolls and do all the maintenance. The guy actually said that (without the ha ha ha).

Well, he was chastised as the Legislature gently reminded him (a) neither he or the Highway Dept. actually owns I-70 in MO and can’t sell it to anyone and (b) he may not care what the voters say but the legislature does.

You can’t make up this stuff.

They did something similar to that in Indiana.

No they didn't. The Indiana Toll Road was built as a toll road. It was never a freeway. Indiana still owns the toll road. They leased it to a company for $4B. That company went belly up. So Indiana took it back and leased it to another company. It was never sold.

But if most other states do same (toll roads) there could be 10’s of thousands of turnpike administration jobs.
Not if they lease them to private companies. That way the taxpayer is off the hook for employing anyone, providing benefits, retirement, etc... only the users pay.

Infrastructure. We all use it, we should all pay.

Income tax (Federal and State) - 35% plus 6%

FICA and Medicare tax - 7.65%

Property tax.

Sales tax (state/local) - 8.75%

Gas tax.

I pay plenty of taxes. Let’s add more since enough is not enough.

My guess is those wanting more taxes don’t pay much in taxes.

That's why I said similar.

Thats a whole ‘nother discussion privatization or public jobs.
Seems like public jobs grow more as the years go by.

i would be curious about what % of the govt budget, any govt budget, goes towards personnel costs.

I mean the real costs. It would be about impossible to get the truth.

The double dipping, the contractors, the millions and millions of employees including everyone from the pres down to the school board. And the consultants! The retirement bennies.

I don't remember the details but back in the day i looked into the % of the military budget that is for personnel expenses. It was way way more than you would think.

You want to pay less and get more and better?? Get the govt out of anything that can be done by the private sector.

I don't see that happening, govt employees and their dependents etc are a powerful voting block.

Again, term limits might fix that.

Problem is, we all don’t use it.
At least not directly…

Looks like PA turnpike is privatizing

Wow Mossy, moderator making fun of everyday user?
I don’t mind and can take a joke, but is that ok in the rules of conduct?

Seems like a bad example to set

They tried to privatize it in 2008 and failed. They're still thinking about it.

Interesting note: much of the Pennsylvania Turnpike was built over the abandoned South Pennsylvania RR.

Probably his wife uses his computer... or perhaps there's something he isn't telling us? :D
I got a week in re-education camp for insulting another TBNer.
Maybe you are “protected” from insulting others? I mean I have thick skin, but hey, good on you!

It's one of the reasons I post links instead of screen shots. Who knows what the algorithm will pop up on your screen for targeted ads? I've been getting mostly swim wear ads for years. Never searched for swim wear. We do have a pool.

Doesnt take away from the fact that you set a bad example.….

The tax system in this country is incredibly misunderstood. As your income rises, your percentage share of income tax rises as well. Most people know that. But what most don't know is that what you are allowed to deduct is also whittled away as your income rises. High earners pay plenty of tax.

The more you broaden the complexity of a business, the more deductions you are eligible for

I pay what is required of me... more than most, but then I do more than most, and I live better than most; so what is the downside of that? If you think you are paying too much, then you probably aren't doing as much as you should... Just say'n...

It’s your patriotic duty to pay as LITTLE taxes as possible and to use every LEGAL loophole or EXEMPTION possible.
It is also the right of those who complain of under service from municipalities or other governing bodies to donate any extra they want, to improve services.
Good luck with that!
