No... nothing wrong on your end. I had posted a response that one of the mods must not have agreed with and they yanked it.
Thank you, hard to duck politics completely when it is a big part of the issue. That said I understand why they don't want the entire forum to be about it:)

Best,

We have stabilized here at about $2.80 for regular and $3.00 for diesel. Traffic is still not as bad as pre-virus. Roads usually ok and close to speed limit driving.

Been meaning to say hi, hope you are doing well. Use to work in stl a fair bit, and never cared for the drive over on 70, glad to hear traffic is still light:) It looks like the people that are going back to the office are doing so slowly, but, I think they will all be there by year end.

Best,

When prices get a little higher, the RV industry will tank. They nearly shut down when it got to $4 last time. RV manufacturing is big in northern Indiana.

Hi.

I think you are correct.

Once school starts next year I’m thinking traffic will be back to the typical mess.

Post the facts. Leave the politics out.
In addition to market forces, there is also taxation. In CA it goes up again July 1 due to taxes.

I travel often between CA and NV. Always fill in NV, never CA. Price is noticeably higher in CA, often .50 cents per gallon difference. Recently paid $3.79 for diesel in NV, which is typical here. It's $3.89/gal at the last stop out of NV and $4.49/gal at the first stop inside CA.

From the LA Times:

"Under SB 1, the gas tax increased 12 cents per gallon on Nov. 1, 2017, jumped an additional 5.6 cents a gallon on July 1, 2019, and 3.2 cents last July 1 — bringing the total state levy to 50.5 cents per gallon."

Yes, taxes. There's going to be some major changes in how states fund their highways as cars become electric and pay no gas tax. I'm convinced they'll have to shift to a metered mileage system in the future. We'll all end up paying by the mile.

And some things seem to stay the same ...

I saw in the same article recently that taxes need to be higher because CA has such heavy usage of roadways, and, taxes need to increase because people were not driving as much due to Covid.

Makes sense. Should be easy enough to administer assuming mileage can be read via the OBD port. Most states with annual safety/emissions inspection plug into that anyway, no reason they can't also read mileage and send a bill. Not sure how they'd deal with pre-1995 vehicles, though there probably aren't enough still on the road to make that big a difference.
States would have to figure out a way to determine reciprocity payments for out-of-state travel.

Without knowing the numbers involved, that could save me a lot of money. I typically drive less than 5,000 miles a year. Paying 30 or 40 or more cents per gallon whether I drive or not (including mowers and yard tools) might be costing me quite a bit more than a per mile rate.

Might also save the emergency service vehicles of smaller agencies that have to buy fuel at normal gas stations. Pretty sure they'd be exempted from a per mile rate.
There will also be a push to make the interstates all toll roads.
Again, that won't really bother me. Most places I go can be done on back roads. I rarely use the freeways.

They will probably attempt both. Since EV drivers are a minority now, it will be easier to pass legislation that will tax EV's per mile. When EV's are more common they will push for all vehicles to pay by mile plus gas taxes. I've never seen a tax repealed, so they will continue to tax gas also.

Probably need to hire, what, another 15,000 workers nationally to administer all that? Maybe build a 10 story building?
No biggie

Diesel : 85 cent

Gasoline: 1 dollar
Is your location confidential? If so, why did you post this. If this is per gallon, I'll be on my way. Where?
