Tracking mud into shop....what to do?

After a few hours of tilling my turf tires get packed full of clay, so I do some heavy turns in the grass to get as much off as possible then I head out to the paved road and spin them as clean as possible but I still track a ton of mud down my gravel driveway and into the shop.

been thinking of switching to a self cleaning tire that I can still mow with? Maybe not a full out ag tire but some thing in between...

One million dollars to you sir if you figure it out!! I have a 65 horse tractor, skid steer, mini x, and a bunch of quads. I let the mud dry till it is easy to sweep, then pile it under the leaky skid until I have a bucket full, shovel it in and dump it. Funny you mention it, but, I hate getting it in the gravel more than the shop.

If I ever win the lottery, I will bury all the clay 3 feet deep and never speak of it again.

When I complain about it, my more laid back friends tell me to wait till it is dry to fart around outside.............

clay where I am is like gum sticking to the lugs - yea a pressure washer works but still needs some help with a scraper and a screw driver to clean the lugs out.

I get mud stuck in my R4's too. Once it drys it leaves a trail on the floors when I drive out. Then I sweep it up. For me it's seasonal. My floors are smooth and easy to clean so less of an issue.

I am glad you're not cleaning your tires on roads I drive. Then I would have dirty truck to wash.

We are in a heavy snow zone and the plow contractor sands frequently.
Problem is that the sand he uses has a fair clay content.
Come spring all our vehicles are clay tinted and on a dry dry day you can see the dust cloud as a vehicle approaches.
During spring thaw the roads are so greasy from clay you'd believe you were driving on ice.

Best way I found is when your tires are packed full is to park your tractor outside of your shop in the grassy area where you won’t mind the dirt coming off. Wait till the next day or two when the mud is all dry and when you drive it will mostly all fall out. Works great.

Park your tractor in your shop backwards with a blade
attached to the 3pt so when you go out use the blade
to clean up behind you

My R4 tires never hold mud. Then again my soil is pretty sandy. I try not to work the soil much on the real wet days anyway.

I put the pto in neutral, lower the 3ph, drive around in the grass a bit while the tiller bounces the dirt off and park in the center of the shop. The next day or so, I drive out and shake it off again. My "push broom" cleans up the floor great.

love this idea along with leaving the tractor out over night once a in awhile - beautiful push broom!

I also dont go out once its muddy but just to give you an idea how sticky our clay is - its been dry for about 4 weeks with days above 15-20 degrees Celsius or 59-68F.

Ill try the above method before i go spend some money on R4s.

Set up a system if rails (grates) that support equipment (like cattle guard) in front of shop door and pressure wash equipment before moving into shop....

I've had both turf and R4s. Both track mud into the garage. I or the wife just sweep it out when we take the tractor out. Maybe R1s would not track so much?

My shop is nice with an epoxy painted floor so I know what you mean. There are degrees of mud on the floor and while it doesn't bother me, it bothers me. Leaving a tractor out overnight only works sometimes because he humidity rises at night and mud doesn't dry out. Plus, the tire in contact with the ground will never dry so mud sticks there.

Turf tires are the worst at mud, R1's less bad and R4's leave the least mud. I just sweep mud out but after a brewski or two conjure up mental solutions. One would be to leave the shop vac plugged in and near the tractor. When I leave mud, loosely sweep out the chunks and vac up the dust. That's one idea I've thought about but never done.

Another I discovered was to leave sheets just cardboard on the floor where the tires go. Drive on, drive off and easy clean up. You only have to do it when mud is bad. Did this one by accident and it worked well. Old 4'x4' sheets from seed and fert pallets.


That's how I would keep mud out of a shop. Keeping off gravel drive is not possible so I just drive in the grass and find a way into the concrete floor barn. When I have to park in the gravel floor barn the only solution I found was an old HF tarp that I once was too lazy to pick up. It held 100% of the mud when I backed out. Lasted a very long time.
