Hydro Filter - How Many Years Before Replacing

For those that dont put a lot of hours on your tractor, how long do you wait before changing the hydro filter? I have been using the tractor less the past few years and got to thinking about service life in terms of years rather then hours. The hydro filter is a Donaldson on a B2150hsd. I suppose a call to Donaldson may provide an answer also.

Believe you will find all fluid and filters give a hour or mileage and time to change by. I have run Kubota brand hyd oil filters for three years and no issue. Have two have done that with and even then don't hit 300 hours on either. I rather replace them ever two years.

Hours on the machine as recommended in owners manual. My L3901 is 400 hours on Hydro filter and 50 on HST and then at 200 and then 400 on HST.

Spoke with Kubota and the service person said every couple years, 2 or 3, maybe 4 or maybe even 5.... should be ok. No specs in terms of years from Kubota. They have customers that bring in tractors with original filters that are 8 - 10 years old. They strongly believe that is too long. They service some tractors with hydro filters that are a few years old and the customers do not want to have them changed out due to finances. Kubota filter is Cellulose.

My neighbor changes his Kubota hydro filter annually.

Baldwin recommended to change annually. BT260-10, cellulose.

Donaldson has not called me back yet. P556005, cellulose.

fwiw - Im thinking that 3, or 4 max, is good for "me".

Hours of use are not the only consideration for low use machines. The calendar should be considered. If you do not get to the change interval in two years, consider changing anyway. I would certainly not go more than 3. Transmissions can take on a considerable amount of condensation which is often overlooked. Water contamination causes damage before it causes overt symptoms.

Good points. Have been out of the country the past several months. Need to look at the fluid also. What is a good way to check for moisture? Especially if its at the bottom of the tank as it is heavier then hydro fluid.

Yes, Id say 2...3 years, as stated above. Id be concerned about the filter media deteriorating at some point. The filters arent THAT expensive or hard to change.....

Good points. Have been out of the country the past several months. Need to look at the fluid also. What is a good way to check for moisture? Especially if its at the bottom of the tank as it is heavier then hydro fluid.

Use a brake fluid tester.

Yeah, I agree. They replied saying they will look for one with good date code. They have 12 in stock. Otherwise they will refund.

First time (by the book hours) I changed my Hydro Filter there were considerable metal finds on the magnetic ring. Next time (by the book hours) there were less but still some machining debris. Third change the filter was clean of finds. Your mileage may vary but for my pocketbook, changing oil and Hydraulic filters by the book is the only way to go. The cost of genuine Kubota filters, Kubota hydraulic fluid and approved engine oil is nothing compared to the cost of engines and pumps. I also find it cheap every two years to flush the coolant and replace with pre-mix coolant. t doesn't get cold here but the good coolant liquid also lubes the water pump and one avoids clogs in the coolant path. There's no quicker way to seize a diesel than deny it proper cooling.

That is likely NOT an expiration date but a Manufacturing date. I'd use a new sealed filter were it fifty years old, without concern.

I dont recall anyone saying it is an expiration date.

It is a manufacturing date with a shelf life of 5 years.

Donaldson filters are very good. Maybe newer tractors require tighter filtration specs.
