Question for those better in the know...

Social Distancing, Stay at Home, etc... all make perfect sense to me.

That said, the media is pushing for people to support local businesses offering take out, curbside pickup and also home delivery.

Does this make sense or is it statistically safe?

No data but applying the same basic principles we use in a hospital, the food is cooked and therefore safe. The packaging could possibly have been handled by an asymptomatic virus shedder so to be ultra safe you can wipe down the outside of each container with a 1:50 solution of Clorox with a rag before touching with bare hands. I’ve been swiping my credit card and asking the clerk to “sign” for me so I don’t touch anything other than my credit card and the bag of food. I keep one credit card in my car glove box for gas and takeout so I don’t need to fiddle with my wallet. It’s still kinda winter here so I just leave my gloves on until I get home. Give the gloves a quick wipe before taking them off. Not perfect but I’m comfortable with that level of precautions after spending a career in hospital infection control.

Not much can be done for hospitality but the media is doing in the field reporting on how the eateries with no take out are adjusting to keep the lights on.

A big hurdle is basic supplies... like the cartons and bags... California recently outlawed the typical Styrofoam take out containers and single use complimentary bags...

One mid scale restaurant said customers have been calling offering support but the limiting factor is packaging...

The push has gone so far as restaurants can provide mixed drinks, wine and beer for take out provided it is with a food order which has left a lot of bars to get creative... chips and dip with your adult beverage to go.

I have been preparing all meals the last 3 weeks... not a problem but being able to pick something up would mean extending what I have home on the shelf.

Currently, eggs are very hard to come by and meat departments don't have much to offer and the package meats are getting sparse... still waiting for it to hit the cereal isle...

So Doc... it looks like it would be OK to place a take out order for Mom following precautions...

Yep. We’re also cooking mostly at home but I’ve done a couple of big takeout orders this past week. Chinese, Thai and Indian food do well as leftovers so I make a big order and get 3-4 meals out of one trip.

Yep... a nice dinner out often makes up several meals from leftovers...

Family tradition is going out to celebrate birthdays... not the end of the world but I keep having to explain why it didn't.

Define distress and who exactly should be charged. Ambulance are frequently told a certain hospital is full and are not accepting any more patients. There are only so many beds and staff.
