Best way to split 3'-4' boulder?

From all I have gathered, Dexpan and probably 5-6 holes will split that nice.
I had a neighbor that even did that with 1/2" holes and plug and feathers, but he had lots of time on hand.*
He'd drill some 5-6 1/2" holes 3/4 thru and insert the plugs and pound with a 5 lb sledge and presto!
Under my cabin I also split with plugs but that was with a 300 cfm compressor, some 15 mins per boulder using 3 plugs/hole per.
I'd vote for dexpan and as big as your hammer drill will handle.
It works, I've seen it.

*shucks he even drilled with a small sledge and star shaped hand bit.

Anyone do any sculpting of large or outcropped rock etc.?...I have a neighbor that has some exposed granite that is just perfect for a mini Mt Rushmore type project...

As nice as that boulder looks, I really believe it would sell.

Little 'mount rushmore' ???
Just used as an example...If it was on my property I would probably go with local wildlife and game profiles etc...It really is a perfect place for something like that...a natural outcropping along a well traveled community road...could become a landmark that will be there long after the current owner is dust...

That’s a multi thousand dollar moving job which sets it past a stupid whim purchase for most people but hey there’s a sucker born every minute.
IMO, the target market is someone with a large skid steer or small to medium-sized excavator and a truck/trailer capable of hauling both the slidsteer/excavator and the rock.
For them, it's 20 minutes to load the excavator, plus drive time.

Maybe I’m over estimating the size of that rock but I’ve used a 95-2 Kubota a fair amount and own a John Deere 310. I have serious doubts about loading that rock with either one, at least by lifting it. Maybe rolling it up the ramps would be possible but that’s hard on rock and trailer. I delivered a rock to a guy that was a lot smaller than that one maybe a 36-40” circle and he couldn’t lift it off my truck with a skid steer in the 8-9000 pound range.

I agree with aczlan. Person in the landscaping business is good potential buyer.

It’s the shipping charges that get ya!

Would be logistical nightmare getting an excavator here and a buyer with a heavy trailer. I don’t have that much parking.

I think a rollback wrecker could load that pretty quick. They have a big winch at the front, and the bed comes right to the ground. Winch it up on some skids, strap it down.

Double. Do you have an approximate measurement of the rock?

It sloped down on the tree side so is longer than it appears.
I’m going to say it’s egg shaped, 5’-6’ long, by 3’-4’ at widest

Good idea.

A rectangle 4x4x6 at a density of 170 pounds per CF would be over 16000 pounds. A rock 3x3x6 would be about half that.

I always heard the old guys say they drilled holes and filled with water then waited for a freeze....

It's kinda neat where it is. Is there some reason you really NEED to deal with it?

Take the tree out behind it and make it a focal point for a rose bush. Put a bird bath on top of it. Or just let it be a perch for the dog who seems interested in it.
