John Deere 970 gear shift handle stripped

Bought a used john deere 970 gear driven 4x4 tractor. Problem is the gear shift lever seems stripped where it mounts to transmission inside. I'm still able to shift gears but the lever flops around. I'm afraid to unbolt the 4 bolts that hold it on and pull it straight out. Any one ever have this problem.

I would bet item 31 on that page is missing. It maybe laying in the bottom of your transmission.

I have not done one on a JD 970, have on a couple pickup 4 speed manual transmissions it is fairly easy.
