Stick welding question

/ Stick welding question #11
All the cattle guard failures I've seen are at the weld between the pipe and beams. Since the pipe only touches the beam at a point, there's a lot of leverage on the weld. I'm attempting to make something like a saddle so the pipe is held by two welds. Will see how it works first time a cement truck runs over it. :)
It seems like a very smart idea for a stronger joint.

I'm not sure how smart it was. It doubled the required welds. I stick welded for 6 hours straight. Granted, I stuck a rod 1 out of every 3 restarts and I'm not a great SMAW welder.

This is why I like GMAW (MIG). Not trying to start a debate here!

What kind of welding hood do you have? Yes it's expensive but I'll bet that this will keep your head cooler. They had a replacement head gear that was just 2 small fans, but they came out with this instead. CoolBelt™ - MillerWelds
