Double post.

Today I received a 55" Wicked Root Grapple from EA. This is my first Grapple and have a simple question to the more experienced grapplers out there. I am using a mechanical valve and was wondering what y'all would prefer if you had my valve. Lifting handle up to open or lifting handle up to close? I am thinking up to open. Thoughts?

I have a similar set up on my yanmar. I push the valve forward to open and pull it to close. Doesn't really matter. It's just what ever works best for you

Can't let a lid polemic pass without jumpin' in. My ranch hand pointed out that when he chomps down on a load of Yaupon with the single lid on our 72" Wicked, the Yaupon itself tightly squeezes the whole wad together securely.

Here he is transporting a batch a quarter of a mile without losing any. The red sunshade of the tractor is barely visible above the massive bundle and a splash of daylight can be glimpsed below.

Wow, he should win an award for that grapple load. Glad to see your grapple was more than up to the task.

I think it's a mental thing and will probably best be determined by trying it out.

Personally, I may prefer pulling down to open and up to close, but if you factor in loader joystick motions, it could change my mind.

How's that for clear as mud?

I have a brand new (25 hours) WR Long 3rd-function valve (operates my EA grapple) that is leaking/FLOWING from the A-port/top allen-hex fitting... Does anyone know why/had this experience...WRLongValveLeak1.JPGWRLongValveLeak2.JPG

Nelson Long says those haven't been a problem. The plug, which ironically says "zero-leak gold", has two forms of leak protection. It has a tapered head and an o ring.

Have you tried to tighten the plug?
If not, try that first.

If you have, Nelson said they can send a new plug(s) out as a remedy, but you'll need to go through the dealer who ordered it from WR Long(don't think it was us).

I hope this helps.
Keep us posted.

Thanks for 'being there' Travis... I have a LOT of work scheduled/pre-paid for this machine/YOUR EA grapple and so far it has been performing NOT ONLY FLAWLESSLY BUT F'ING IMPRESSIVE/AWESOME... I have made NO/ZERO adjustments for fear that I might be changing a psi setting... I am unfamiliar with these particular electric-over-hydraulic-valves but I am NOT a stranger to hydraulics (on large/commercial fishing vessels and associated winch/steering/boom-lift OEM Design/Engineering)... I wanted to leave all settings/ports/plugs as they were for forensic diagnosis... I have contacted my MOST appreciated dealer and they are 'on-it' also... Tractor-Dealer/EA/WR Long/Et al are all responding FANTASTIC... Thanks for the help/support... OK, first thing I will do is try to tighten the leaking 'allen-hex-plug' since I now know it is not a psi setting/adjustment... FYI, I have gone over/reviewed EVERYTHING and see NOTHING amiss and can't recall any incident that would have caused an extreme over-psi or flow-interruption unless there is something in the hydraulic fluid (IE Teflon tape) which is highly unlikely due to the volume/filtration/age...

Aww, Mad Mac, you're just toying with us. I don't think there's really a tractor in there. ;)

I tightened those A-port allen-hex-plugs and a A-port-fitting on top of the valve and it solved the problem... The allen-hex-plug was so loose it could have fallen out... Not sure why... Apparently it has been weeping/leaking but I did not notice, which is unusual because I take meticulous care of my equipment... I was initially afraid to tighten them because I thought they might be pilot-operated/psi adjustments... Anyway, after tightening things I ran the tractor/grapple-bucket all day with no issues... Man I love this rig... Thanks again Travis for YOUR prompt/informative reply/help... MUCH appreciated...
