Flail Mower Let's talk flail mowers

Houser... Manyof my circumstances are similar to yours. I only wish I had heard of a 'flail' 20-some years ago. My 72" Caroni is quicker faster and cleaner than the three, various rotary mowers I used before. There's another thread about me cutting wet vs. dry grass that has some recent pics.

I'm really having a hard time with the recommended 2" cutting height. When I got my Alamo it was set at 2.5", and I scalped everything in sight and really damaged a portion of my fescue pasture with that height.

Right now it's set at 4" and may go down to 3.5" soon. First cuttings of the year will be 6" height.

I'm just not sure 2" cut height is the best recommendation for the health of the grass.

Scalping simply indicates a lawn that is not a plane, and has nothing to do with anything else. Different grasses can be cut different heights and be healthy (think putting green!)
I have the bumpiest two acres of lawn on the planet; hilly and bumpy. Gotta mow high enough to not scalp, which leave dips hidden. Until you step in them. Nothing a couple of hundred yards of fill wouldn't fix.

I understand what scalping is, what I'm saying is that a 2" cut height is bad for my fescue and taller grasses.

A 2" cut height can't be just good for everything a flail touches.

I agree that 2" is just too low for fescue grass cutting unless you're tying to kill it. I don't even cut my lawn that short and never brush hog that short unless I'm trying to kill poison ivy.

Is that 2" recommendation for fescue, or just a general recommendation? Not that I could go 2" in my yard ...

All,

I have not been around in a while. Too busy with business travel and tinkering on farm. Some of you may recall I purchased a Del Morino and I'm happy to report that it has well exceeded my expectations. Zero problems, tough as nails and the L6060 doesn't even know it's there. I shot this 'over the shoulder' video while mowing and thought I would share. As you will see, it leaves a pretty nice cut for as much as it's chewing through. This would not have been possible with my Woods rotary.

I hope all your summers are going well, you are staying safe and flailing away!

Thanks for the video, looks like you're moving at a pretty good clip. I burned the belts off of my Caroni the first time I used it and was mowing at least 1/2 that fast in grass less than knee high. Put new NAPA belts on and hoping that was the problem.

I think it really all depends on the grass. I have a pasture that has some wetter areas and dryer areas. I can be going along in grass the same height through the pasture and I'll be fine in one area and in another I literally have to push in the clutch and let the Tractor/mower catch up because it's bogging down too much. I would love to have a tractor with hydrostatic drive and about 10 more HP, but for now that's not in the budget so I just have to be ready with the clutch.

I could be wrong but it looks to me like although the grass is tall it's not too thick/stringy so it looks like the mower is chewing it up nicely. :)

It's a silly thing, but I like the 'ribs' I get with the Caroni when the grass is already pretty short. Mostly I cut knee-high so I only see a blanket of cuttings.
