What can/should I use to coat it with to protect it?

I'm guessing something like mineral oil? (light coat of course)

How about something that I already have on hand, peanut oil?

Yep, don't put any kind of oil on it as it will come off on the wood. Use a wax.

Get it smooth and shinny by whatever means you wish. (Belt sander works for me) Then apply naval jelly or phosphoric acid and wait several days before you make it shiny again. Then a wax. I use floor wax but there are many others that would work. Real serious and a coat of clear expoxy might be considered.

I'm guessing with the T-9, I should first put some elbow grease into the growing spots prior to applying it?

MinWax paste wax is what I use. Cut off a chunk of it and put it in 2 layers of cheesecloth. Rub it on the table top, take a break, and buff it out. It lasts quite a while.

With the T-9, I sand all my metal table tops and clean with paint thinner or brake cleaner. Spray on T-9 and let dry for a few minutes and wipe off. Clean top and recoat every few months. Helps the wood slide on the top. If I am doing a lot of wood working I will spray some on and wipe off to help the wood slide easier.

Back when I had a cabinet grade table saw with a cast iron table, I used bee's wax on it. I would use a fine steel wool on your rust spots, rubbing by hand. I certainly wouldn't use a power sander of any kind, but just me I guess. Now I just have a cheapie "hobbyist" saw with an aluminum table, so no worries there.

Gallon lasts me over a year. I bought a sweet pump spray bottle as per Amazon recommendation. Very handy for my forge area, equipment maintenance etc. I have a couple spray cans for tight areas, nut and bolts, battery terminals, boat stuff etc. it isn't cheap but the rust busting abilities, creep and protection is the best I have found. Spray cans are 12 oz and run 15-20$, a 128oz gallon is a deal.

When I had a rust area on my table saw caused by a cold beverage bottle I used a sanding block with a fine grade sand paper. Once all the rust was gone I used a paste wax to protect it.

I use Johnson Paste wax on my tools. Keep the beds dry and don't allow anyone to put a soda or bottle on your tools.

I use automotive wax. Seems to hold up better than regular paste wax.
