That's what helps "newbs" like me out. I get to see what works (and what doesn't).

I'm not sure I'd promote that video. Guy takes 10 minutes to do a 2 minute job. Maybe the second jaw slowed him down.

If you toughed it out to the video end, his wife finally comes out, probably to see when he intended to come in and help with housecleaning. Sadly, he finally ran out of tree.

If it was his first or 2nd time using a grapple, I think he did pretty good. From the looks of the tractor, it could've been his first or second time using it as well.
I do think it's a helpful video, although his technique could use some polishing. The neighbor was definitely projecting grapple envy vibes!

Please remember ....... IT was a grapple expert long before he got his first one. The rest of us has to learn by "on the job training".

I agree. It just isn't a good example of how efficient a grapple can be. Frankly, with the time he took he could have just chained those limbs to a standard bucket.

If it was labeled as a noobie doing his first grapple chore that would be just fine.

Not so. I paid my dues in the seat. I have owned one since 2005 though so I've been at it for a while. My avatar photo was taken on the first day I had my grapple on my old CK20. Loved that combo!

We all have to learn at our own pace. I can remember some very embarrassing attempts to use the FEL on my first tractor. "Why can't I get any dirt in the bucket? :hissyfit:

I used to station my wife out front to tell me when I had enough scooped up in the bucket to make it worthwhile to move. But hey I got better. A lot better. I ain't bragging, (well, maybe a little), but I can operate a FEL and move materiel just about as good as anyone. And while I have only had a grapple for about 3 years, I am pretty good with it too.

If that was the guys first or second time on the grapple, he did OK.

Great! We all learned by doing! But why do you have a need to denigrate someone learning to use his grapple with the ballz to do a video.

Post a video of your first time? I'm sure you were smooth, efficient, and took 2 minutes to do a 10 minute job?

I just hope that guy is not a fellow TBN member or you would owe him apology! I think you owe him one anyway.

/ The WICKED Root & Debris GRAPPLE!!!!!!! #1,710
I didn't "denigrate" someone trying to learn to use a grapple. I pointed out simply that watching a noobie (not identified as such) is NOT a good way to learn how to best use a grapple. EA has some good grapple videos done by Ted or Peanut (don't recall). Promote those, not some Youtube baloney where someone with a brand new grapple sets up his iphone and picks away at a brush pile. Exactly what do you think was useful about that video anyway? The fact that he picked up one branch at a time? The way he failed to balance the load? The video is of an inexperienced operator. Nothing wrong with being inexperienced but it is worthwhile to practice a bit before clogging up interweb bandwidth. And the guys video is certainly not as good as what EA has done in house with more experienced operators. Would you like to see a noobie diesel mechanic show you how to rebuild an engine on Youtube???

Come on, Francis!

We are just real, understanding and do not try to put ourselves above the customers. It's a level playing field.
Those who have talked to me or Ted and have watched our videos should know that. We aren't a big promotion outfit & we aren't sitting here in slacks.
Heck, lots of grappling moves Ted makes should never be attempted.

I'm sticking with the video being useful & real. Man, the grapple sure does look good on his tractor, too!

I don't care if the operator knows what they're doing or not, I'll watch all the grapple videos I can find.

At least till mine arrives...

How's things going down your way Travis? Any single lids heading for WV any time soon? :)

Me too, especially if there's a Wicked Grapple in it!

Going awesome! We're having the biggest start to the year ever! Currently over 25 people waiting on their Wicked Grapples, so yours could be out another week or just over!

OK, Kellyanne, I understand. Everything here is perfect. Let me just give a slightly divergent opinion, that if you step back for a moment, you will realize is well intentioned.

You guys use this thread as a marketing tool pure and simple. Many potential grapple purchasers are likely to come across this thread because you assiduously work to keep it going. Well done. Ted should be pleased with your efforts. There is a difference however between simply keeping the thread as a not so subtle advertisement and having it serve as a focal point for discussion and education about grapples. When you post a video knowing that a bunch of non grapple owners are going to see it, it would help if you provided some context rather than just "wow, look at what this guy does with his beautiful new EA grapple". Case in point: the video under discussion is fine as an example of a new grapple user starting to learn how to use it. It should be labelled or introduced as such. It isn't a particularly good example of what EA usually posts with Ted giving fairly detailed discussion of the matter aimed directly at a potential new grapple purchaser. Again, nothing wrong with showing a new guy learning to use a grapple but not necessarily something you want to show to another new guy who has no context.

You should wonder why Ford doesn't show videos of newly licensed teenagers driving Mustangs or why Chevy doesn't have little old ladies driving to the grocery store in their pickups. Post videos that show how it should be done not just any old bandwidth hogging baloney that someone decides to send you. A little curating would be helpful. If you are going to post a video make sure it accurately represents what you are selling. You are selling grapples and other implements to tractor owners who have come to respect EA videos as educational tools worth learning from. The video under discussion doesn't meet those standards. If it was simply introduced as "hey, here's a guy using a grapple for the first time" that would provide the necessary context. Even better would be to point out what the guy does right (no major safety issues etc) and wrong.

Bottom line: TBN is primarily an educational forum for tractor owners not simply a marketing tool where keeping the topic at the top of the current threads is a major goal. Let's keep it that way. It can work both ways for EA if you don't forget the education/discussion part of the equation.

All I said is that I came across the video on YouTube. I didn't say yay, or beautiful grapple or anything else rainbows & unicorns about it besides which grapple it is and the tractor it's on.

Besides, I knew pointers would be given and technique would be critiqued by the seasoned vets, which is expected & fine......only I'm the one being critiqued.

Go back and reread the first comment I made about the grapple video. No critique of you, just of the video as an example. Others like MikeJeakins pointed out the same thing.

If you post something it is helpful if you either give it context or otherwise anyone will assume you believe it. Same principle as retweeting something. (And please don't use POTUS as a model for how to do that!)

Dunno, I'm a soon-to-be-new-grapple-owner. I found the video useful when I'd located it on my own, I'm sure I'm not the only one. Did it appear to be a shining example of "skilled operation"? no... To me it looks like an older, likely retired fella, operating some relatively new hardware and trying to get the hang of it. I bet he watched his own video dozens of times to try and see how he could improve his operation. One of the things I've been watching most is the angle of curl being used to pick stuff up. What I'm seeing most is, grapples need curled down farther than a bucket when trying to get stuff up off the ground.

You will get the hang of it pretty quick. You will learn how to come in from the top with the grapple open to crush down brush piles so you can get a bigger mouthful, and how to lean out and note where you front "teeth" are to pinch things. You might want to take a look at the "accessory" I built for mine to be able to pluck out saplings if that interest you:

I.T I understand what your getting at I truly do and on many levels your correct.
HOWEVER this is the first 3016 grapple video I've seen. It's the same tractor I have. I to am a NOOB operator of both a tractor and eventually a grapple. I've watched that video 5 times now I've learned several things from it.
Some being I think the duel lid is two slow on that unit so something I too could have an issue with but he also didn't have the tractor rippems up that high so verdict unknown. It it's swayed me to a single lid to be on the safe side.
It looks like he is using a diverter valve and not a true 3rd function but I could be wrong. This is something I was considering in trying to cut initial cost, 3rd function is 800+$ a diverter valve is 300~$. Seeing that I now know that I'd be unhappy with a diverter setup. There are more things I noticed as well but won't get into those.
I like that EA is keeping its roots real and not turning their noses up at Noobs like him OR MYSELF.
So thanks for the video EA
