I think the definition would depend on the piece of equipment. A small 1700 Ford might be high at 3500 to 4000 hours but if it was an industrial engine I might go 6000 to 7000. Question is, what was the unit designed to run? I have a Perkins Diesel that the book said is designed for 8000 hours. They also list servicing that engine at 12000 hours.

My Duramax has an hour meter and odometer. When the odometer was at about 100k the hour meter was about 4000hrs. My research at the time suggested the hours were a bit high for that mileage- about 25mph avg.
A fire engine I saw had about 19000 miles and about 1450 hrs. Under the abuse the fire engine sees they are pulling heads for something by about 150,000-200,000 miles. They are all Detroit Diesels. A little math says they last about 10,000+ hrs with terrible treatment and good maintenance before needed a major repair.
Not sure the engine or application you are wanting info for. Hopefully having hours and mileage on two diesels will provide some reference and be somewhat useful for your curiosity.

Just wanting opinions, we put about 50-60 hrs a month on our machines. But I have seen people with 200 hrs wanting to trade in.

I cut the axels and jacks out of an old semi trailer and set it on the ground for a guy. They were refrigerated trucks. The hour meter on one trailer read 9,000 and the other was 40,000. He told me I could have the engines, but I've yet to go get them. The machine usually gives up long before the engine anyway.

I saw a garbage truck with the milage and hours written on the side. I don't remember either number but the average speed was very low. Like less than 5 mph average.

My wife's 2005 Yukon has 140k miles and around 3800 hours. Average speed is just under 37 mph.

Can I assume you are talking about relatively small diesel engines in small tractors? You give no clue on the equipment other than what is below your avatar. Your title question and follow up are too vague at least for me to address what you are asking.

Tractor diesel engines in farm applications...
I've seen units in the shop my dad worked in being rebuilt in the 5-6K range with some units up to 8-10K hours range...
Small gas engines on lawn mowers anything over 2-3K is IMHO high...
I have a 4610 SU Ford at 2900 hours I consider broken in and in great shape...
Small diesels can last as long also...
I consider anything over 6K hours high in diesel tractor applications...
My Buick Lesabre has over 220K miles so I guesstimate around 5K plus engine hours...
Still runs great...

1970's~80's ThermoKing refrigeration units? Very likely the same Yanmar 2 cylinder Diesel as in my (1980) YM240. This engine was also a standard for the tiny offshore Japanese fishing boats of that era where reliability is obviously critical. I'll never wear my tractor out in my lifetime. I have no idea if its three-digit hourmeter means 1,400, 2,400, 3,400 or whatever but it runs like new.

A smaller YM186D that I sold dyno tested exceeding new specs, at 30 years old. Hours unknown but had to be substantial, I rebuilt the steering box and discovered this was the second rebuild.

Your engines were probably still in decent running condition when those trailers were retired. Of course they may have been overhauled periodically, especially the 40,000 hour one. Replace the sleeves/pistons plus the usual and its essentially a new engine. I would like to hear what you do with them.

Contractors mower tractor jd6910 12800 hrs and mower/rake tractor jd6920 11000 hrs very high by contractor standards and quite high for most farmers to. My old 1964 mf 135 had done 11000 hours.

Around 420 for a lot of people.

If we (ourselves) work 40 hours a week or roughly 1800 hours a year and work 45 years thats give or take 81000 hours. And the the government still doesn't consider us wore out. So if it runs good looks ok thats all that matters. Just joking alittle guys :)

A forklift at work has 35 000 hours, it works shifts and rakes in close to 100 hrs a week. It is a 2007 model and still looks brand new.

Depends on the equipment year it was made.

Most farm tractor engines will go 10,000-20,000 hours and have many more thousands left in them when serviced properly. CUT tractors don't get the hours on them like larger farm tractors that might run 16 hours per day or more. Much of the degrading of CUTs is from setting unused and not many of them go 10K without something falling apart, if not the engine then the hydraulics or other parts. I would say 5000 hours on a CUT and I would be suspicious of what it has left in it.

Of course tractor engines are designed to be easily overhauled and then they are ready for another lifetime of work.

A real crude old timer in my town had a 1984 John Deere 410B 2wd backhoe that wore through two different hour meters. He was certain it had at least 25,000 hours on the original engine. He finally replaced it with a 4wd 410C, but the B still ran well when he sold it.

Hours is not a very good meter to use by it'self on evaluating a tractor. You can have a tractor with 6000 hours on it that was very well taken care of regular, and still has lots of life in it. Another tractor, abused by the op or hired help with only a thousand hours on it could be junk.

I made it 51,000 hours,, that was enough, I retired.

(I did marry a wife with a similar career,, she retired at the same time,, so, combined, we put in 102,000 hours!)

I do not count the hours I work on my 40 acres,, that is play time,,
kinda like using a tractor to pull a float in a parade.

This tractor was delivered to the farmer January 2013, then returned to the dealer June 2016,, 1870 hours.
It was used for 42 months, or, what appears to be a little over an hour a day? (Dairy farm)
Supposedly, he has three of this type tractor, trades one every year.

EVERYONE considers it to have high hours,,,

On Thursday, I was the first one to ever activate the PTO,, it worked perfectly,,,

I LOVE these HIGH HOUR machines!!
I might go back, and ask for the NEXT one he trades in,,,
