3 pt hitch logging winch, is any one better than another?

I'm no logger but my thought on the subject would be not letting them dig in the ground, seems like that would waste a lot of fuel, I kinda pictured getting the front off the ground a little? What about a logger duty boom poll, the reason I ask was because I thought about pulling tops out of woods and feel I would buy a boom poll to lift up a little rather than drag dirt with the logs.

If you are winching over a distance and/or uneven terrain, the log can dig in. When you get the log(s) to the winch you do lift them for transport. Some winches you can pull from the top pulley and that lessens the chance the log digging in.

I also have a Wallenstein and like it.

I see now ok, that makes more sense and kinda what I pictured the large plate for.

I have a Norse 350 from Labonville, mounted on a 35 hp Century (Branson)with the hinged plate and it is very useful. Especially if I need to pull the wagon behind it to haul logs. W.Jones DSCN4429.jpg

When did you get your norse? May I ask the price?

Especially when the logs weigh over 2,000 pounds ea. and are being pulled through soft ground!

I have a Norse 450 on a 50hp Massey. LOVE IT!! I researched a lot before I purchased and really... Norse (igland), Farmi, Wallenstein... I'd just look for best deal. The hinged blade on the Norse is nice and the 450 has a upper and lower mount for the pulley. What a great attachment this is.

Of course, we all do what we gotta do, and I've dragged logs through some stuff that I probably shouldn't have myself, but today reminded me why I love cutting wood in the winter. Just a skim coat of snow over nicely frozen ground. Just perfect logging conditions.

I didn't have a ton of time, but I skidded in this elm log that I dropped on Friday, along with a few other sticks. rps20161210_231136_260.jpg

The winch is a Farmi 351. I bought it because it was just about the only used winch in decent shape that I ever saw. Didn't give any consideration to brand or features. :)

Blooper, how much or when did you buy your winch from labonville?

I bought a Wallenstein FX65 about 5 years ago.
At the time, I think it was 2200$ Canadian....with 3 chocker chains included.
A good chunk of money, but never regretted it...would not do without in the woods now !
So much easier...lots of my fields are bordered with steep hills and that is where most of the winch work comes in handy.

VroomVroom, I purchased my Norse in the fall of 2015. I think the price with the snatch block was about $2800. W Jones

Thanks 52wej. That U.S dollars. That would be $3500 Canadian. If that's a cheaper price the others are pretty expensive. Just wondering how the clutch works in them? From exploded assemblies i see that they have a friction plate on the spool and one on the chain gear/cog that's rotating by the pto but I'm not sure how they come together when you pull the string. same as your standard vehicle or some other way.....

Man in black, where did you purchase it from?

Very simple construction that pushes the spool against the large cog wheel, some has a nailed/glued friction plate, some has friction pads on the cog wheel. All brands are very similar in design on the clutch.

Where did you buy it from Man in Black, that's a good deal.

I kinda figured that's how it works to a degree. But I didn't know if it was possible to be able to torque enough to make a good contact between the two clutch plates. I'm amazed it doesn't slip easier under such forces. I didn't know it was on little twisted roundstock type set up. I was thinking two bushings cut at a taper so when you try twisting one relative to another one has to slide axially, pushing the spool into the chain sprocket. What keeps them apart, spring loaded or they naturally separate as one would be spinning at all the time. (chain sprocket.) Also, in your pics you sent Avgv, its hard to see what is there for a chain tensioner. Their rare hear. In fact, I don't think I have ever saw one on the island here. I heard of one guy that had one I believe. So no way for me to look at one.

Yeah I see it but it looks like steel the chain is riding on......the tensioner looks like it's a steel round billet putting tension on the chain. Also, does the spool just slide back and fourth when using the clutch on the shaft using bushings? Thanks for the pics
