5:30AM and 56F in Challis, ID this morning. We had rain here overnight that is moving east and north in my direction of travel, but as it goes as the crow flies, it looks like I'll stay behind it for most of the day. Especially if I don't hurry, and I don't think you're supposed to hurry through Yellowstone or over the Beartooths (or is that Bearteeth?).
Eric, sorry about your Honda. What, then, did they propose as a cure? Maybe they'll have to give you a new car if they can't fix your old one?
Drew, the baking sounds delicious. I wouldn't do too good a job on your housekeeping, though, as it's never a good idea to make house guests too comfortable.
Spent most of yesterday in the mountains, mostly dodging rain clouds in the afternoon. Many miles of wet roads, but only a few minutes of actual rain. Tomorrow is the desert so I'll be using eye drops then if ever on this trip. The humidity yesterday was good for the eye, hardly any trouble with it at all. Beautiful scenery, lush green valleys full of cows and grass, huge pines and boulders in the passes. Big lots full of tractors and farm implements in the larger towns. Triple trailers stacked full of hay and alfalfa bales headed west, too.
In Challis the place to be is The Lodge, and it turns out I was here lord knows how many years ago. Same deal then as now: Check in at the bar, have a beer while registering, very inexpensive rooms, great deal on a ribeye that made the plate disappear. Had dinner chatting with the owner who sat next to me on the next bar stool, the barkeeper's husband on the stool on the other side. Nice place, and it's for sale, but -30F in the winter is just too cold even though the owner says it seldom snows here!
I'll skim the northern part of Yellowstone park today on the way to Billings. Right now there's a huge thunderstorm cell headed right for the place, and I hope for once the Weather Channel is right about their predictions. If they are, the scenery will get a nice shower and be all sparkly and clean when I get there. If not, me and the bike'll get a shower, too. Won't be the first time I've been in rain on a motorcycle, having ridden through two El Nino winters in California so far.
Hang in there, Gang, Friday's comin'!
