Dab, you make a good point. As soon as SSI payments start, I'll probably jump a tax bracket and the gummint takes more of it back. Been thinkin' maybe I should start IRA withdrawals (I can do so without penalties in another six months) and put them into a Roth IRA where they can grow unmolested. That'll also increase my taxes, but not as much as if I waited until the SSI checks are comin' in, too. I feel a spreadsheet (and probably a headache) comin' on... And maybe if we made the Whitehouse a "gun free zone" somebody would wake up and realize that the military should be armed whenever on duty, no matter where they are?
Drew, that's quite a boom! Makes a dangerous job easy, and probably fun, too. Wouldn't want to be one of the guys on the ground, though, dodging falling limbs, then having to bend over and heave them into the
chipper. That's where the real work is in that job! And good you're making progress with that neighboring parcel. Great peace of mind when all the dust settles.
300, these days the more I get done the more I find I still have to go. I think it has something to do with "continuous improvement"!
Kyle, I never understood how someone could justify giving away that kind of money for property tax every year. Always had a good paying job, but I guess a fancy house never meant that much to me? But with 72 acres, maybe you could raise a few head of cows every year and offset some of that tax bill. And as far as motorcycles go, remember golfers have more than one club. Buy 'em both!
Eric, when I was seven we moved to a housing development that was only partly finished, and there were lots of basements being dug. We had lots of dirt clod fights as a result, and more than once Mom made me take all my clothes off out in the garage. Even had dirt stains on my underwear and socks  Now *those* were the good ol' days!
Tried some of that new POR-15 Top Coat on a section of rusty frame rail yesterday morning. Prepped the surface with a flapper wheel in the die grinder, then washed with POR-15 Metal Prep, rinsing with lots of water. Blew it off with a duster, then set it out in the sun for half an hour to dry. Used a nice 1" paint brush so there wouldn't be any over spray. Just like the old POR-15 paint, the Top Coat went on kind of lumpy, but soon leveled out into the nicest, smoothest coat you could want. Covered well, and the semi gloss finish I selected was perfect for a frame. Will try to get the rest done the same way today.
Ran errands in town the rest of the day, among them returning the router from last week. No problems at Best Buy, and the new ones even saved me a couple of bux. Got them home, installed and configured one, changing all the passwords. Came back to check something a bit later and it wouldn't let me log in, so we're not off to a good start. It's supposed to get hot again this afternoon, too hot to be out in the garage, so I'll start setting up with the DD-WRT open source router firmware on the duplicate I purchased at the same time. I had pretty good luck with it years ago, and am looking forward to better usage tracking and stability.
Just about the time I gave up on the router foolishness the skirt steak that was sizzling on the grill was done, and I enjoyed another installment of "The Seventies" on CNN. This one focused on the Ford and Carter administrations, very dark days for our country. Is it any wonder that many of the people my age have such a fundamental distrust of government? Finished up with an episode of "Mountain Men". All these guys are older than I am, living a much harder but very independent, and simpler, lifestyle. Could their trials and tribulations be a bit of a preview for what might be comin' my way?
TGIF! Hope everyone enjoys the weekend!
