Larger Saw Purchase

a 461 is a great compliment to a 261. 50cc saw and a 70cc saw. that being said i love me 660
Yes, I started with a 35cc 021 for years as "Harry Homeowner in suburbia". Then about 2010 I won a 62CC saw and started doing some CSM.

Hope this will just fit the bill with what work I have now. One day, maybe I can run across a 660 for the few bigger jobs. I'm new to the CAD and I'm starting to understand this addiction.
That's what I said and got a 660 off ebay for $500, it was much better at CSM. :)

you guys are making me jealous... I may just have to go buy a 660 to compliment my 361. I have a 25" bar on the 361 because that is what it came with. It is a little bigger than what the saw is comfortable with. Ideally I would like to scale back to a 20" on the 361, get a 261 with a 16" or 18", then a 660 with maybe a 32" for real big stuff, though it would probably get used the least.
Have you opened up the muffler?

Be careful of getting addicted, I went from the 021 to the JD CS62, two 660's and an 088 ( http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/chainsaws/257299-i-couldnt-believe-088-450-a.html?highlight=#post2998122 ) and a Woodmizer LT10. SWMBO finally said no more.

I always thought it would be cool to have an 066/660 or an 088/880. Just because

Mike Sounds like your in the same boat i was with my 361. Sure it would cut (painfully) slow with a 25" bar but if your using the full length it does it about the same speed a 290 does cutting with a 20" bar. Which was unacceptable for me. also the saw was too nose heavy with the 25". The 660 is perfectly balanced (like an anchor) with a 25" bar it sits nice and level holding the handle. A 32" would be a good alternate length for bigger stuff i got the dealer to throw in the 36" for the price of the 25" I cut a lot with the full 36" i stack up cord wood in a rack and cut it all at once. The dogs on the 660 are at least an inch longer than the 660 so the 25" bar is really more like 22.5-23" can't remember exactly. If it didn't already have the 20" bar and 4 or 5 loops for the MS361 i'd probably go with a 16" or 18" bar. After you use a 660:) in descent sized wood you'll never want to cut any wood bigger than 12-14" with your 361 again. Have i helped convince you that you need a bigger saw yet?

Same here on the 880 or even a 090  although i don't think I'd ever want to use it the 660 weighs enough for me and we don't have many trees in Michigan that would need that big of a saw but it sure would look cool with a 59" bar and .404 chain

I run a 25" bar on my 046, I may get myself a 32" eventually, as to one of the bigger saws, someday. Currently I've got an 018, 2 024 Supers, 026 Pro, 036 Pro, 361, 046 Magnum, my Dad's old 032 and my Grandpa's 70s vintage 031. HT131 pole saw as well

I just became the owner of an almost new Stihl 270. Brother in law had it and due to shoulder problems, couldn't pull the starter cord. I got it for $110. It came with an 18" bar and I immediately bought a 20" to go on it. It is supposed to handle up to a 22" bar according to the Stihl dealer where I bought the bar and chain but he didn't have a 22" in stock. I think the 20" is going to be big enough to cut most of my trees. I have a couple of oaks to cut that were lightning struck. That will be my first chore with the Stihl. It goes in the stable with my Husky 260 with 18" bar and a Homelite with 16" I use for limbing.

We think about the same Dave, I get a bigger saw if it takes more than 10 seconds to cut a piece of firewood. The limit for me with the 034 super is probably around 14-16". I have a 20" on the 034, I think a 18" bar would be a good bar for this saw. I think the dogs on the 660 are about 2" long. You need to get a MS170, then you would have 30, 60, and 90cc saws, the new 3 saw plan:D

That was a great deal for a MS270.

that's a good 3 saw plan. i also follow it

I have the 5 saw plan, 30cc, 50cc, 60cc, 70cc, and 90cc.

Holy schmokes! Nice collection! I always wanted something in the 90cc class but just don't have big enough trees.

It would work better than the 2 saw plan (50cc and 70cc). I have the 5 saw plan, 30cc, 50cc, 60cc, 70cc, and 90cc.

i started with the one saw plan 60cc, then i figured i needed bigger and smaller

i like it you add the two plans together

I just bought a Echo Timberwolf 59cc with a 20" Bar. Man it cuts like Butter. Good Buy!

I started with a 034 Super. I had some big trees I needed to work up. I almost got a MS 460 but I did not know at the time if it would have enough power, so for a little more money I went with the MS 660. A buddy straight gassed his 024 Super and decided to get a new saw so he gave it to me. I got it going with a MS 260 P/C. Then for some reason a friend let me try his MS 170. I liked it so I found a deal on a nice one on craigslist. I know a lot of people think a saw is not a saw unless it is a pro saw but the MS 170 is a nice little saw. I put an adjustable carb on mine and muffler modded it. It is surprising how good it cuts, even with a safety chain:confused2: After looking at Arboristsite I decided I needed a 70cc saw. I really wanted a pre 2000 046. They supposedly had a better cylinder on them and were more powerful than the MS 460. I was open to a any nice 70cc Stihl though. All I could find was junk on craigslist for $400-500. I got tired of looking for a used saw so I got a new MS 441 C M. I still want to get a top handle saw, probably a MS 201T. I'll hold out for a nice used one. I also would like to get a MS 390. I have seen some videos of those that have been ported and they cut nice. I think it would be cool to have a saw like that will out cut a pro saw.

/ Larger Saw Purchase #55
i also have a 201T, the timing has been advance the muffler opened up and the limiter caps on the carb removed, it's a great little saw. i use it for just about anything 8" or less.

/ Larger Saw Purchase #56
Top handles are great small saws, I would not be without one. HOWEVER, they can be very dangerous to the inexperienced user and that is one reason Stihl considers them pro saws. It is easy to use one hand or even with two hands, they are prone to kick back. I have cut professionally so I own one, but for those inexperienced looking for a small saw, consider the MS170 or MS171. They are little workhorses.

/ Larger Saw Purchase #57
I'm with Tom, top handle saws are serious business. They are real easy to use one handed and or above your head, which strictly speaking are both "no-no's". They do make a rear handled 200, and I assume 201. That would be a sweet little saw. Though to pay $600 for one, though.

/ Larger Saw Purchase #58
Seems most tree cutters are pretty disappointed with the 201 vs. The old 200.

/ Larger Saw Purchase #59
stock a 201 is not much fun.

did you see when the 200T was discontinued and the new one were going for $1200+

I would do that to one if I got a 201T. I hear it really wakes them up. I'm am hopping to get a chance to advance the timing on the MS 170 tomorrow. It has the key cast in flywheel so IDK how hard it is going to be.

I think it is like anything else, people don't like change. I saw a video on Youtube of a new 200T vs a 201T. In stock form they were pretty much dead even. The guy removed the spark arrestor from both saw and then compared them. The 200t was bit faster then. I don't know it this is why people don't like the 201T or not.

Have you seen what people want for a MS 290?

Heck yeah they are. I think they are tough to beat for the money.
